Main Scriptures: 1Sam.18:1-4
More Scriptures: 1Pet.3:7, Gal.6:9, Php.4:18
And it came to pass when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day and would not let him go no more home to his father’s house. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him and gave it to David and his garments even to his sword and to his bow and to his girdle (1Sam.18:1-4). This Scripture gives us a graphic encounter between the son of the king, Jonathan and a mere shepherd boy, David. There are two extremes between these two personalities. One is born into affluence and lives in affluence, power and importance and the other from a shepherd without influence, authority or command. The first personality is Jonathan and the second is David. Jonathan who has more advantages than David demonstrates an uncommon act of good works to David. He strips his robe and gives it to David. He gives his sword (authority) to David. He also gives David his robe (beauty and dignity), bow (power) and girdle (strength). Jonathan does all of these to David without any strings attached. He does it unconditionally because he loves him. So it is with you.
As a husband and lover of your wife, God desires you to be like Jonathan. God wants you to give your wife all that you have without any strings attached. God wants you to respond and serve your wife just like Christ serves the church without having any form of reputation. You must understand that you have more advantages than your wife, and this is why the Scripture describes her as a weaker vessel (1Pet.3:7). So because she is a weaker vessel, you are expected to extend your advantages to her, just the same way Jonathan extended his advantages to David. One very great benefit you will enjoy if you approach the way you relate with your wife and children the Jonathan’s way is victory over frustration. You will not be discouraged or become weary of doing well to them (Gal.6:9). You know that whatever you do for and to your flock is unto the Lord and because God is a covenant keeping God, He will reward your service bountifully. Jonathan’s capsule is the best way to go as a good and godly husband.
· Father, by Your Spirit, help me to surrender my will, emotions and body to You.
· Father, help me not to hold back my advantages from my flock.
· Father, empower me by Your blood to overcome the spirit of pride and heaviness.
I will from today apply the Jonathan’s capsule in my relationship with my wife and children because I want to be a good and godly husband to them in Jesus name. Amen.
