Main Scriptures: Job.2:9-10
More Scriptures: Ps.51:10, Gen.3:6, Job.1:12
Recall that in our previous teaching, we looked at the lives of two husbands-Adam and David. We studied why Adam failed and why David succeeded. From Scriptures, we established that while both of them betrayed the confidence that God had in them, their approaches were different. Adam tried to justify his fall when God confronted him. Adam said, “it is the wife whom thou gave me”. But when David was confronted by God through Prophet Nathan, he did not explain it away, rather he fell on his face in repentance and said, “Lord have mercy upon me oh Lord, according to thy loving kindness….(Ps.51:10). Today, let us look at the lives of these two husbands-Adam and Job.
In Genesis chapter three, the deceiver, satan showed up. He engaged his wife to deceive her to eat the forbidden fruit. Her husband was watching while the conversation was going on. Adam knew what God had commanded them to do. The instruction not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was with him. But in Gen.3:6, his wife offered him the forbidden fruit to eat and he did eat. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof and did eat and GAVE ALSO UNTO HER HUSBAND WITH HER AND HE DID EAT. And the consequence was that they both fell and the husband got more of the punishment than the wife. Job on the hand was also offered the forbidden fruit by his wife after the calamities that befell his family-death of all his children and loss of all his possessions (Job 1:14-20). Satan had had a conversation with God about Job (Job.1:9-12). He also came through his wife. Then said his wife unto him, dost thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God and die. BUT HE SAID UNTO HER, THOU SPEAKEST AS ONE OF THE FOOLISH WOMEN SPEAKETH. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? IN ALL THIS DID NOT JOB SIN WITH HIS LIPS (Job 2:9-10).
As a husband, you must draw the line between what is acceptable and what is not, on the basis of the word of God, with your wife. Much as you must honour her as Christ honours the Church, you must let her know that you are accountable first to God. You must not allow your wife to influence you to disobey the commandments of Scriptures. If God’s word has said it, you must lead her to obey it willingly and delightsomely.
· Father, by the power in the blood of Jesus Christ, deliver me from wrong influences.
· Father, by Your Spirit, make me teachable and give me a heart to be led by You.
· Father, empower me by Your Spirit to live my life according to Your will and purposes.
I put my life into the hands of God and I shall walk in total obedience to all His commandments because that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
