Main Scriptures: Genesis 2:14-18
More Scriptures: Eph.5:23, Ps.133:2, Phil.2:3
Learning how to lead your wife and children begins with getting the license to lead. Just as a person who wants to learn how to drive a car goes to obtain a learner’s permit and subsequently gets a driver’s license, so also has God given you the permit to lead your wife and children. And the ultimate of God’s desire for you is to make your wife and children more like Jesus Christ. There are many husbands, who are not sure of their position, while others feel very threatened. In Gen.2:14-18, God committed the family into the hands of the husband, Adam for two simple reasons-to dress and to keep. That is authority or better still a license to oversee his family kingdom. God has given you the same right. And to prove that you are indeed in charge, He described you as the head of the family (Ep.5:23). More importantly, God said you are a fountain from where your wife and children draw strength and encouragement from (Ps.133:2). From the above, you can see that from the day you declared to the world to take your lovely wedded wife, you have obtained the license to lead her. And the day you became a father, you assume leadership responsibility over your children.
However, it is very important for you to understand the sign posts of effective leadership. One of such sign posts is humility. The reason there is so much debate about whether husbands are leaders or not is because too many husbands have not been selfless in service. Yes, God has called you to rule your flock, but your leadership is about servanthood. In Phil.2:3, the Scriptures encourages us not to say or do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain deceit, but in humility considering others better than yourselves (NIV). If any husband sincerely puts this verse of Scripture into practice and in the fear of God, it will solve more problems between him and his wife than anything else. Your wife and children crave for your godly leadership. They want to jump into your car and drive with you. Another thing that the license offers you is the power to look ahead. As the head of the family, God has empowered you to anticipate and strategically plan for your wife and children. You have been ordained to set the goals- spiritual, physical and emotional. In a way, your license confers on you the power of the Chief Executive Officer. Husbands don’t throw your license away or watch it expire without using it. Make God proud of the investments He has made in your life by making you the head of your family.
• Father, in the name of Jesus, make me useful to my wife and children and Your kingdom
• Father, in the name of Jesus, deliver me from every form of foolishness.
• Father, in the name of Jesus, save me from being slothful as I lead my family.
I give myself wholly to leading my wife and children in the pathway of righteousness because that is what endears me to God and confirms me as a good and godly husband in Jesus name. Amen.
