Main Scripture: Roms. 16:4-5
More Scriptures: Gen.18:19, Job 1:1, 1Pet.3:7
Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Jesus. Who have for my life laid down their own necks, unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles (Rom.16:4-5). There is a popular Nigerian programme shown every Sunday evening on AIT Television station. It is about advertising restaurants in Nigerian where local foods are sold. The anchor visits these restaurants and has a taste of their meals. At the end of eating, he presents to his host a gift- a gold plated cooking spoon- to appreciate his host for the meal. Now, if you look at this and relate it with our main scripture today, you will discover that you are duty bound to appreciate your wife when she serves you. As a husband, you must never see the service that your wife renders to you as your right. Rather, you should see it as a privilege. That is the only way you can get more from her. Your wife as well as your children must be appreciated. One of the truths from Scriptures is that your wife and children are not slaves. They are fearfully and wonderfully made by God and in His image also. Apostle Paul appreciated the efforts of Priscilla and Aquila. It doesn’t matter how little the service may be from your wife and children, you must not take it for granted.
But why must I appreciate my flock? First, it is because it is Scriptural. God commends us when we serve Him. In fact, He rewards us with blessings. God takes notice of those small acts of service. So, if the Almighty God appreciates you and I, then you owe it to your wife and children to thank them when they serve. Secondly, you are empowering your children to understand the importance of appreciation. As the spiritual leader in your home, your job is to show your flock the path of righteousness. For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him (Gen.18:19). Let me share with you my personal testimony. Everytime I finish eating the meal my wife serves me when I return from work in the evening, I tell her “thank you”. Why? Because she is my helpmeet (Gen.2:18). On a particular day, my daughter had to ask me why I always tell her mummy, thank you. I told her that her mother deserves it because she helped to prepare the meal. This is what I discovered started happening amongst my children. Whenever, my wife or I give them something, no matter how small it may be, each one of them says, “thank you mummy or thank you daddy”.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to live by godly examples to my flock.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to be truthful and honest with my flock.
· Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to continue to appreciate my flock.
I give honour to my wife and children for everything and in everything because that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
