A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken (Pro.15:13)
I have observed that one important area of the husbandman that the devil attacks is his spirit man. The devil puts the husband under pressure and makes him feel broken and defeated. All of these are to break the spirit of the man which consequently leads to depression. And if the broken spirit is not mended on time, it may lead to high blood pressure and eventual death. As the head of your family, it is true that there is a lot that is expected of you. Your flock expects you to function like a good and true shepherd. The host of heaven expects you to love your wife as Jesus Christ has loved the church and also nurture your children in the admonition of the Lord (Eph.5:25, Eph.6:4). Things may not have worked out as you had planned. You may have even lost your job or even an opportunity. Whatever the case may be, make merry and let not your spirit be broken.
But why should I not allow sorrow of the heart? The answer is found is Pro.17:22. A merry heart doeth good like medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones. The moment your spirit man is broken, it affects your physical and mental disposition. It affects the state of your health and may eventually lead to death. Another reason why you must not allow the sorrow of heart is because it makes you lose the power to move ahead as a man, husband and father. Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop, but a good word maketh it glad (Pro.12:25). So, as a husband and leader, you must understand that you have everything to lose when your spirit is broken. Therefore, the way out is for you to have a cheerful heart. You must learn to always give thanks to God even for the life that you live. You must understand that God did not make you the head of your family to kill you. His intention for you is to bless you and make you a fit and proper vessel of honour to your wife, children and the world at large.
