The story of the prodigal son continues to inspire depth of revelation concerning the office of the husbandman. This was a son who demanded from his wealthy father what was due to him as inheritance. The father did not hesitate but gave him everything, even though he doubted his son’s ability to handle such resources. Nevertheless, he gave his son his portion of the wealth. The son left home and for many days no one heard from him. He was lost. But his father believed that his son would come back. He was hopeful that his son would be restored. And for all those days that his son was away, he looked forward to the return of his son. He also prayed for his recovery.
Now, this is what God wants you to do for your wife or children, who may have squandered opportunities you gave them in the past. God doesn’t want you to give up on them. God doesn’t want you to close the door against your flock. He wants you to extend to them the God-kind of love-mercy, forgiveness, compassion and hope. The rudiment of the world tells you that opportunity lost cannot be regained. But that is not so with God. His mercies are new every morning (Lam.3:22-23). And because you are made in his image and likeness, you possess His kind of nature. Jesus, the perfect example of a good and godly husband always looks out for His sheep when they are lost. It doesn’t matter how far the sheep may have gone in recklessness, He has enough rooms to pardon and erase the faults of the offenders.
As the shepherd over your flock, you must be patient with the weakness and inadequacies of your sheep. It is a virtue that would help you function as a good and godly husband in your family fold. You must love your wife and children as Jesus will love them, their sins notwithstanding.
