While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar. Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he saw him. But the angel said, don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth will give you a son and you are to name him John (Lk.1:11-13) NLT
For any husband who desires to continue to be relevant to his flock must of necessity engage the weapon of prayers and intercession. This is because the prayer altar is the platform God has provided for you and I to connect to the greatness of His power. Zechariah was the husband of Elizabeth. They walked in the fear of the Lord but they did not have a child. The husband engaged the prayer altar and God visited his family and terminated barrenness. God blessed them with a son. There are lessons to be learnt from this Bible passage. The first is that challenges of life will show up. Sometimes they come announced and other times they don’t. The second is that satan always gives alternatives that may look right but the end leads to death. Zechariah may not have prepared for the challenge of barrenness his family faced. He also would have sought for the lap of another woman to bear for him a child either openly or secretly, yet he chose the path of honour. He stayed with God
That is who you are as the head and the priest over your sheep. As the husband, you can change the course and direction of your sheepfold on the altar of prayer. In whatever area your family fold is experiencing unfruitfulness, you do not need to fear or compromise your righteous stand. You must seek God’s help and stay in His presence. Some of the blessings you enjoy when you take your place in prayers for your flock are honour and glory. My little children of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you (Gal.4:19). The voice of God that will resolve those questions in your family fold is available to you. All you need is to open your heart in prayers. That is what makes you a priest and a good shepherd indeed.
