Main Scriptures: Ps.141:2-3
More Scriptures: Pro.12:14, Pro.13:3, Ps.106:33
I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Ps.141:1-2 (NIV)
Are you aware that your lips have a door the same way there is a door to the sheepfold? Well, the word of God in Ps.141 tells you and I so. A lot of the times your wife and children would make you angry by their conduct and bad attitude. Sometimes, they disrespect you, become disloyal or outrightly rebel against you. It is a daily conflict that every shepherd would contend with as he leads his sheep. So, if you do not guard your lips, you may utter words that will destroy the foundation of your wife and children. You may call them unprintable names that will further worsen their negative attitudes towards you. According to the word of God, every name that Adam called the animals that is exactly what they became. When he called an animal lion, it truly acted like a lion. The same occurred with zebras, goats and sheep.
You must understand that the will of God is to make you a good and godly husband. God wants you to influence your wife and children and the world for Jesus Christ. God also wants you to conduct yourself with dignity and discretion. And one major way He wants to achieve this is through your ability to control your lips so that you don’t utter very dangerous words that may inflict permanent damage on your sheep. The one who guards his mouth preserves his life, the one who opens wide his lips comes to ruins (Pro.13:3) NASB.
But how do I guard my lips so that I do not speak ungraceful words to my wife and children? Firstly, you must give attention to the word of God and be prepared to allow the Word to influence you. Until the word of God takes dominance of your spirit man, you cannot gain mastery of your lips. And one principal way to achieve this is by trusting every word God speaks from His word (Jos.1:6-9). Secondly, you must give yourself to a life of prayer and speaking in the Holy Ghost. Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of a good and godly husband, gave you and I a master key over temptation. He said, watch and pray that ye fall not into temptation. Two things happen when you pray. It helps you to ease your pain to God and it opens your heart to instructions from the Holy Spirit (Jn.14:26). And as you guard your lips and speak wise words, they will bring peace in your home and dispels tension and bitterness (Pro.12:14) NLT.
