Main Scriptures: 1Tim.3:1-5

More Scriptures: Acts 3:16, Ti.1:6, Rom.16:18

As the head of your family, God wants you to demonstrate your leadership qualities first from your family-fold. Every good and godly virtue you are known for in your office, service unit in church, political circle must first be testified of by your wife and children. This is what the scripture tells us in 1Tim.3. And that is exactly what Jesus Christ, the perfect example of a good and godly husband, tried to teach when He explained that we should be clean from inside out. Sometime ago, I read a report of a great man of God who died sometime ago. At his funeral, sympathizers said kind words about the deceased. But when it was the turn of his children and wife to speak, the reverse was the case. The husband and father they knew at home was completely different from the one spoken of nicely by outsiders. To outsiders, he was a kind hearted, attentive and caring man, but to his wife and children, he was unkind and irresponsive. He lived a double life. He was accountable outside but not in his home.

This is not the will of God for you as the head of the family and the spiritual leader of your flock. You are first accountable to your wife and children before those outside. In Acts 3:16, the Scripture gives a classic example. And his name, through faith in his name, hath made this man strong, WHOM YE SEE AND KNOW, yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness IN THE PRESENCE OF YOU ALL.  Apostle Peter’s work started from within, the gate called Beautiful, and it reflected to everyone around the area. You are not a kind husband until you have demonstrated kindness first and foremost to your wife and children. You are not a generous husband until you have first demonstrated generosity to your wife and children. In 1Tim.3, the Bible gives every husband the starting place. For if any man know not how to RULE HIS OWN HOUSE, how shall he take care of the church of God? (1Tim.3:5). Your real worth as a good and godly leader begins from your home. It is the value of your relationship that you have with your wife and children that counts before God. How well you have been received by your flock is the true foundation upon which others can respect and honour you. The statement made by the late South African President, Nelson Mandela, when he was asked if there was one thing he would have loved to change. He said, “His family”. Your wife and children are your first and foremost members. Live the life you want people outside to see with your sheep first. As a husband, you must work to build your life around your immediate flock. Let your flock be your cheerleaders first before outsiders. Your accountability doesn’t start from the outside, but from your wife and children-your home.
