As the head of the family and the spiritual leader in your sheepfold, it is important for you to appreciate your flock’s greatest need. What your wife and children need is much more than the clothes you provide for them or the houses you built for them or the vacations you organize for them. What they need the most from you is mentorship. That is what is more enduring than anything else. And that is exactly what Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of a good and godly husband, tries to teach in Matt.17:14-21.
And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to him, kneeling down to Him and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him…..then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, why could we not cast it out. So, Jesus said to them because of your unbelief………..if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there and it will move and nothing will be impossible for you….. (Matt.17:14-21).
Jesus Christ, understood the place of mentorship. The disciples had been with Him for some time yet they could not reproduce His virtue; they could not heal the sick boy. So, Jesus began to tutor them, helping them to understand what is required to function as a healing agent. And in the course of time, the people acknowledged that Christ has come down in the likeness of men. This is what is expected of you. God expects you to impart your wife and children with those godly virtues that you are known for. God desires you to reproduce yourself in the lives of your sheep. Whatever good and godly virtues you have manifested that people can see around you must not end with you. You have to transfer it to your wife and children. That is what mentoring is all about.
But for you to mentor your flock, you must have a mentor. And that mentor is Jesus Christ. The Scripture tells us to look unto Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2). As you study the word of God, meditate on it and live out the instructions, your life becomes a true reflection of His life for your wife and children to see. Subsequently, you become empowered to influence your wife and children for God and good (Matt.5:14-16). You must understand that your life is the written epistle that your wife, children and the world read. Be a positive influence to sheep.
