If you are familiar with the sport of lawn tennis, this topic for today-match point, would not be strange to you. In lawn tennis, when a player is at an advantage and at match point, he or she displays these characteristics. He or she is not in a hurry to serve, rather they take their time to weigh the best way to serve so that they can defeat their opponent. They exude confidence and unusual courage. All these attributes attract the spectators and are assured that the player with the advantage and serving match point would win the contest.
Now relate this to how God wants you to function as a godly husbandman. As the shepherd over your sheep, God has made you to have advantage over the challenges that come with leading your wife and children. According to the word of God, you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus (Rom.8:37). Before the pressures show up, God has made provision for your victory-victory over sin, untimely death, bitterness, adultery and stealing, unforgiveness and hatred, hopelessness and doubts. So, just like the player who has the advantage in serving match point and displaying all the nature of a victor, you are serving the match point with victory in sight. You are not serving the match point against your wife and children but against principalities and powers and rulers of darkness in high places (Eph.6:12).
But for you to have an edge over the pressures of sin, satan and the world, you must decide that you’re ordained to lead your flock. You cannot also be a servant to someone who is not leading you. The word of God tells us that the person we yield our bodies to is our master (Rom.6:16). So, the question to you is this. Who is your master? Jesus Christ or satan? To become a victor and reign as a godly husbandman, you must make Jesus Christ your Lord and personal Saviour and allow Him to take first place in your life and all that concerns you (2 Cor.5:17). Secondly, you must continue to feed your faith with the word of God and by speaking boldly and in the Spirit. Faith is a spiritual force. If you don’t make conscious effort to feed it so that it can grow to overcome the challenges of life, you may be swallowed up in defeat. The word of God is the source of your ever growing and ever winning faith (Jn.1:1-3, Heb.11:2-3, Jude 1:20). And finally, you must keep your prayer altar burning (Lk.18:1). As the head, you don’t only ask God to provide all your financial and material needs. You must also pray for your spirit man to be empowered by the Spirit of faith.
You are a victor! The challenges within and outside of your sheepfold are surmountable. Make your headship count for God, your wife, children and the world.
