Main Scriptures: Ps.100:1-3
More Scriptures: Ps.23:2, 1Tim.5:7-8, 1Tim.2:15
Yesterday, I remarked that if a shepherd behaves irresponsibly, he will lose his sheep to other places and other people. This is so important because naturally the sheep will always look for a place to graze. If you don’t give your wife and children attention, someone else will and something will take their attention. If you don’t provide for them, someone else will. If you don’t make them lie down in peace in the sheepfold, they will seek for peace in the wrong places and in the wrong thing. You are more than the man of the house. You are indeed the good shepherd. It requires commitment, sacrifice, discipline, and investment. So, how do I provide suitable grass in a lush location for my sheep? The first step you must take is to invest in your pasture, your sheep and your sheepfold by doing three things. Firstly, you must develop yourself through knowledge (2Tim2:15). God has provided for you a road map on how to nurture, care and provide for your sheep in His word-The Bible. If you don’t search and research the Bible, you will remain in darkness and will continue to stumble in your leadership function. That is why the Scriptures say that study to show thyself approved as a workman who is not ashamed of the gospel but rightly dividing the word of truth (1Tim.2:15). For example, the Bible says that you should handle your wife according to knowledge (1 Pet.3:7). So if you don’t know why God made your wife and how He has created her to function, you will never enjoy her. The same also applies to your children. In Eph.6:4, the Bible commands you to nurture your children in the way and admonition of the Lord. You cannot know how God wants you to train, develop and influence in your children if you do not search the word of God. As the head of your family, there are demands that God has provided for you in Scriptures. If you don’t study, you will not know how much is demanded from you by God, your wife, children and the society.
Secondly, you must work with your mind and hands profitably because your work is where your worth lies. The Bible commands every shepherd to provide for his household. And work is the principal channel through which you can earn income that will help you to fulfill your covenant obligation of a provider. Work is a proof of discipline. You cannot continue to depend on your wife for your upkeep. You cannot fold your hands and expect your wife to pay the rent, finance the children’s school fees and even feed you and the children. God did not create it to be so. Get out of your comfort zone. Thirdly, you must continue to live a life of prayer, fasting, praise and faith.
So, the next time you are called upon to validate your headship, you can and should proudly say, my wife and children are the sheep of my pasture because I have made them to lie down in green and not dry pasture.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with the spirit of grace and supplication.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me how to pray by Your Spirit and help me to pray rightly.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill me with divine wisdom and help me to deliver on Your will for my sheepfold.
FAITH CONFESSION
I take full responsibility to learn from my Bible about the mind of God concerning my wife and children because that is what empowers me to reign as the good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
