And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die (Gen.2:15-17)
Let me share with you an amazing truth from the Bible that will humble you as the man, husband and father. And it has to do with your authority and power as the head of the family. And what is the truth? It is that your power has its limit. If you cross the lines, you will be severely punished and disgraced. As the head, don’t think that and believe you can do anything and hope to get away with it. Don’t think that because you are the head of your family, you can spend your money anyway you like it regardless of whether you are spending it on things that will bring honor to Jesus Christ or not. Or you believe that you have the right and power to have extra-marital relationships or behave indecently with the opposite sex without any consequences. It was this reckless assumption that led to the abrupt end of Samson. God ordained Samson to be a deliverer. God sent him to deliver the people of Israel from the hands of their enemies. Unfortunately, he misused his authority and power. And he was messed up by the adversary. He slept with prostitutes and lacked sexual discipline. What was the result? He lost his power, his sight and his honour as a deliverer.
So, today’s teaching is to remind you that your authority and power operate within boundaries. This is what the Scripture tells us in Gen.2:15-17. After God made the first husband and placed him in the family as the head, He created boundaries for him. God told him what to eat and what not to eat, although he had power to give names to all the animals, trees and birds. Sadly, he operated outside of the boundaries and paid dearly for it (Gen.3:17-19). A life without boundaries is a life headed for destruction. Every time you allow your flesh to always have its way, you are stepping out of boundaries. It will bring you to shame and reproach. It will bring dishonor and make you lose your power. This why you must understand that it is not all things that seem right that is permissible. Therefore, set boundaries for yourself using God’s word as the standards. Define who should relate with, where you go and what your body should do. God has given you power to overcome your body and bring it under total control. For God has not given us the spirit of fear but of boldness and self-control (2Tim.1:7). Don’t let your body dictate for you, bring it under control.
