Main Scriptures: Matt.26:36
More Scriptures: Jer.33:3, Lk.18:1, Lk.21:6
Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane and saith unto the disciples sit ye here while I go and pray yonder. (Matt.26:36)
The event at Gethsemane is symbolic of the price Jesus pays for the sins of the world. It also teaches you and I an important lesson and that is what today’s devotional will teach. There was an impending challenge. Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husband, will soon be crucified. His disciples knew that something tragic was about to happen to their leader, Jesus Christ. I believe they were really discouraged knowing fully well that their shepherd will soon be taken away from them. So, Jesus took them with Him and when they got to Gethsemane, He said these words, sit here while I go to pray….. (Matt.26:36b). He prayed for so many hours and the effect was the grace that helped the disciples to continue with the work of the Master.
That is the lesson. There will be challenges in your sheepfold. Some of the troubles are not planned. Sometimes, you may never have the slightest idea that troubles lie ahead. The challenge may be between you and your wife. It may be between you and your children and even in-laws. It could also be health, financial or even career challenges. These obstacles are real. But the question is how do you overcome them. Jesus Christ gave you the example. He went to pray. As the head of your family, you must understand that living the lifestyle of prayer is not just inevitable, it is a must for you. It is the cure to faintheartedness. It is the engine room of your leadership function as the man, husband and father. It is the key that provides you the strength to remain strong and unwavering in the midst of the turbulence of your headship. This is why Jesus reinforced the need for prayers in Lk.18:1. Men ought to always pray and not faint (Lk.18:1). If you have not learnt how to strengthen your inner man by continuous lifestyle of prayers, you will definitely give up and give in to the challenges in your sheepfold. But when you are a man of prayer, you will never be moved.
Two things happen when you go and pray yonder. The first is that your spirit man receives strength from God. And because your inner man controls your outward man, if your inner man is strengthened, it provides the power for you to confront the problem in your home and overcome them. Secondly, you receive clear direction on what steps to take to calm the storm. The Bible has this to say. Call unto me and I will answer you and SHOW YOU great and mighty things that you know not (Jer.33:3). So, don’t see prayers as a quick fix. Make it part of your daily routine and you will be the victorious godly man, husband and father.
