Yesterday, we began a teaching series on the secret to our gaining command and control as husbands in our sheepfold. We discovered that the first secret is for the husbandman to have the Spirit of wisdom working in great measure in his life. Today, the second secret is for the husband to have the Spirit of understanding. Now what is understanding?
Understanding is the ability to understand something. What this means is the ability to know how something works or what it means. When you relate this with your role as the man, husband and father over your sheep, it becomes very important for you to know how your wife and children function-their make, the character they display at every stage of their lives and God’s plan for them. For instance, in 1Pet.3:7, the Scripture says, husbands deal with thy wife according to knowledge (1Pet.3:7) And in Col.3:21, the Word of God says, father, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged (Col.3:21). As the shepherd over your sheep, there is the knowledge you must have about your wife and children. Your wife is made differently and your children too. God created your wife with certain attributes that you can never possess, so also are your children. So, it is foolishness to deal with your wife as if she is a man. You must also understand that your sheep manifest certain behaviours at some stages of their lives. When your wife is nearing her menopausal stage, she could become aggressive, unyielding and moody. If you don’t understand the stage she is in, you will struggle to love her. When your child is growing into his or her teenage age, he or she could want to ask you more questions, sometimes want to know why he or she must do certain obligations for you. If you do not understand this stage of their lives, you may consider them as rebels and treat them badly. So, you need understanding.
For you to have understanding of your sheep and their personalities, you must work with the Person of the Holy Spirit. He is the only Person who can reveal the real personality of your sheep and their fears and expectations. In Eph.1:18, the Scripture has this to say. I pray that your eyes of understanding be enlightened to see (Eph.1:18). Secondly, you must make yourself available and accessible to your sheep. This you can achieve by getting involved in their affairs. Don’t be too busy not to know how your sheep feels. Ask them questions, make enquiries about their likes and dislikes. Let them ask you questions even if the questions are stupid. According to Jn.10:27, my sheep hear my voice and they know my voice. And as you work to understand your sheep, the friction you keep having with your sheep will cease. You will enjoy their company and have peace of mind.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from lack of understanding.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with the Spirit of understanding in greater measure.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to think, walk, talk and act in the understanding of my wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
I have the Spirit of understanding working in me and it shows in my thought, conduct, action and speech towards my wife and children and the challenges of life because that is what makes me the good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
