Main Scriptures: Jn.14:24-26
More Scriptures: Php.4:4, 1Thess.5:16, Rom.12:12
The main scripture came to me very strongly when I was studying my Scriptures some time ago. It has been a familiar scripture but on this particular day it was given a deeper meaning in my spirit man. And the husbandman can relate with the Scripture. As the head of your family, you are the custodian of your wife, children and the family fold. You are in charge of a territory that is enviable and hence attracts opposition from the world, sin and satan. From the first day that God created the family system in Gen.2:14-18, satan has been going about looking for the family he will devour. Satan wants to take away the knowledge of Jesus Christ from your family; he wants to take away the joy and peace between you and your sheep; he wants to misdirect your sheep to go the path of disrespect, rebellion and confrontation. But it is your personal responsibility to be awake to the wiles of the devil against your position as the head of your family, against your wife and children.
So, how do you stand up to the devil and keep him at away from your sheepfold? From the word of God, we are studying today, there are just two things that you must do. The first is for you to be vigilant. All through Scriptures you will observe that the responsibility to watch over the sheep rested on the shepherd. Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, Eli, Cornelius, Zechariah, Job, Jesus Christ are examples of husbands who were held accountable for the destinies of their sheep. To be vigilant requires you to watch the quality of relationship that your sheep keeps; the quality of books that they read; the quality of films that they watch; the quality of words that proceed from their mouths; and the quality of clothing that they put on. All of these define what your sheep will attract and the attitude they will exude, either positive or negative. You must be intentional with the manner you relate with your flock. You must deliberately create the path for them to be immune to the negative influences around them and provide the godly environment for them to operate. Secondly, you must be sober. To be sober demands that you become quiet in your inner man so that the Holy Spirit can give you instructions, information and direction. And the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, he will teach you all things and will bring to your remembrance …(Jn.14:26). One of the benefits you enjoy as the head of the family when you maintain a quiet spirit is that you hear those small still voices that tell you what satan plans to do or the real intentions of your sheep’s behavior. So, you can sense when your flock are missing it and help them back on the right track. Don’t watch your sheep go down with the devil. Stand up and recover them. That is where your honour lies.
