OVERSIGHT FUNCTIONS (1)

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: 1Pet.5:2

More Scriptures: Ps.23:1, Jer.23:4, Jer.3:22

The title for today’s devotional is drawn from the activities of the legislature, and the Holy Spirit wants to communicate His will to every husband who is striving to become a good and godly priest, shepherd, mentor, pastor, teacher and prophet. In a typical legislative setting, members of the legislature, in the this case senators for those in Nigeria or congressmen for those in the United States of America, visit the agencies or ministries in which they have oversight function. These legislators are like supervisors. They ensure that the funds allocated to these agencies or the functions the agencies are set up to perform are duly executed. That is what God expects from you. He wants you to have an oversight function over your wife and children. This is what the Scripture demands from you as the head of your family. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof not by constraint but willingly, not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind (1Pet.5:2).

Now, what does it mean to exercise oversight function over your flock? It means to feed your flock with knowledge of the truth from the word of God. You are their first pastor and teacher. It is in your beat to guide them through the word of God, explaining those subjects in the Bible that they are confused about. God also wants you to feed them with virtues and values of Jesus Christ-diligence, truthfulness, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, courtesy and hospitality, sacrifice and giving, generosity, kindness, discipline and understanding the whole essence of life and much more. Furthermore, you feed them with your fruits of your labour or hard work. If you claim to be working and the fruits of your labour cannot feed your wife and children, then you are not fruitful. The word of God says that you shall eat the fruits of your labor. So, your wife and children are to eat from the rewards of your work. You also feed them with the knowledge about life and what they need to know of themselves and how to relate with people. You have a lot of work to do.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me how to feed my wife and children profitably.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, bless the works of my hands and let the fruits there from feed my wife, children and others.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, uphold me with Your right hand of righteousness and help me to stand on the truth.

FAITH CONFESSION

I set out to perform my oversight function over my wife and children in the fear and admonition of the Lord because that is the will of God for me as a good and godly husband in Jesus Name. Amen.
