Main Scriptures: Joshua 1:8-10
More Scriptures: Ps.27:1, Ps.29:11, Ps.37:4
Over the years and in my little time I have spent teaching on raising Godly husbandmen, I have discovered that it is not cheap talk to lead your sheep as the godly shepherd. It requires a lot of courage and commitment. So, when I read a quote some time ago from a man of God, it further validates my position that leading your wife and children is hard work. The quote reads “it takes COURAGE for a godly husband to live in this ungodly world”. As the head of the family, you must appreciate that the most vital weapon you need to guide your wife and children is courage and not money or position. Courage is every leader’s greatest asset. And a husband, you need courage because without it you will fail and be discouraged. In Joshua 1, when the mantle of leadership was transferred to Joshua as a result of the death of Moses, one of the things that Joshua feared most was his inability to lead the people of Israel. Just the same way a lot of husbands are filled with fear, not knowing what and how to provide spiritual leadership over their sheep, which God has committed into their hands.
So, let us see what God said to him in verse 9 of Joshua chapter 1. God said, have I not commanded thee? Be STRONG and of a good COURAGE, be not afraid, neither be dismayed: For the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. You must understand that as the head of the family, you obeyed God when you decided to start a family by marrying your wife. In Gen.2:15-18, God said that it is not good for you to be alone. He created a woman for you and by divine favour, God led you and you found your wife and married her and both of you have become one flesh (Gen.2:24). So, you have onbeyed the commandment of God. But when you consider the things coming out from the social media, television, radio and magazines today, you will discover that you will need to muster all the strength and courage from God to provide purposeful influences over your wife and children. You need courage to tell your child that he cannot dress in particular way not befitting of a child of God. You need courage to tell your child that he or she cannot watch a particular kind of movies or go to certain places that contradicts Biblical injunctions. You need courage to stop certain ungodly relationships that your wife maintains. Infact, you need courage to live a godly life at home and outside the home. Your call to husband-hood is not fun fair. It is warfare- you are warring against ungodly influences trying hard to corrupt your wife and children. In this age where the abnormal has become normal, all in the name of being trending and being vogue, you cannot afford to just think your wife and children will be insulated. You must stand on the truth of God’s word through the power of courage.
