Yesterday, I shared with you what love gives. I said love gives spiritual food. Today another virtue that love gives is time. I have discovered that spending time with our flock equals love. But when we do not consciously and deliberately invest our time for them, we create a gap. And if this gap is not quickly bridged, it will lead to a gully which cannot be easily filled. So, until you can prove the time investment in your flock, you are not truly in love. It is not true that you don’t have time for your wife and children. It doesn’t matter what you do for a living, you cannot work for 24 hours. Another secret is that you will never have enough time for anything. You can only create time for things you love. If you love your flock, you will make out time to interact, sit and listen to them. You must never substitute the value of time with things. Material things are good but they do not fill the gap that your absence would create in the lives of your flock. You don’t have to travel out of town to be absent in the lives of your flock.
Your wife doesn’t need you all day. She only needs a moment with you. Your children don’t want you to sit at home with them all day. They only need a moment of interaction with you. It could be just five minutes. It may even be ten minutes. Jesus had time with His disciples despite His busy schedules. His interaction with His disciples helped Him to understand their individual differences, strength and weakness. Now what do you stand to gain when love gives time? First, you overcome the force of assumption. Investment of quality time in your relationship with your wife and children eliminates to the barest minimum assumptions. At the root of disagreement and misunderstanding between you and your flock is assumption. The second blessing is that it takes you deeper in love with your wife and children. One thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple (Ps.27:4). You must desire a fellowship with your flock if you want to make the most of your value in their lives.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, by Your Spirit, reveal to me the power and personality of love.
- Father, by Your Spirit, take me deeper into love with You and cause me to reflect it to my flock.
- Father, by the blood of Jesus Christ, deliver me from every trap of hatred and bitterness towards my flock.
FAITH CONFESSION
The spirit of love is spread abroad in my heart and I extend same to my wife and children because that is what makes me a good and godly husband in Jesus name. Amen.
