Main Scriptures: Matthew 15:4-7
More Scriptures: Jn.8:32, Jas.2:15, 1Pt.5:8
Some time back, I was given a ride by my district leader from a meeting. During the discussion, I made a remark that cultures have a way of affecting our thought pattern. And this could be positive or negative. I have also discovered from experience that traditions remain the major problem for husbands. Most husbands have allowed their decisions to be influenced by what the traditions of their villages say rather than what the word of God says. As the head of the family, you must not allow the traditions of your village or society to determine your behavior toward your wife and children. You must allow God’s word to inform your decisions. At the root of the problems that most husbands are facing at home, is tradition. Even Jesus Christ, our Perfect example of a good and godly husband recognized this truth. In verse 6 of Matt.15, Jesus Christ says …….and honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
As the head of the family and the spiritual leader of your home, you must do away with any culture or tradition that does not agree with the Word of God. For instance, the tradition that considers the wife as an item instead of a person must be thrown away. Your wife is not an item that you bought with money (Ps.139:14). There are some traditions that believe that the responsibility of nurturing a child is that of the wife and mother instead of the father (Eph.6:4, Eph.6:6-8)). Because of this falsehood, most fathers would rather spend more time at the bar, church, work or with friends rather than be at home to impact their children positively for God. Tradition always tells you what has been and not what should be. It resists change. As powerful as Jesus Christ, He couldn’t do much in His country. Tradition hindered Him from manifesting the glory of His assignment on earth. You must fight this enemy called tradition if you want to make any enduring impact in the lives of your wife and children.
So, how do I overcome the power of tradition? You must fill your heart and mind with the knowledge of the truth of the word of God. God’s word remains the cure to every ungodly practices and cultures. This is why Scriptures say that you shall know the truth and the truth that you know shall set you free (Jn.8:32). God’s word contains the truth about how you should lead your wife and children. Secondly, you must be willing to receive God’s instructions for your office and do as commanded as the head of the family, whether it makes sense or not. When you do this, you begin to live as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus Christ.
