Main Scriptures: Gen.1:26-28
More Scriptures: Matt.5:16, 2Thess.3:9, 1Pet.2:21
I was in church on a Sunday service when the Holy Spirit stirred up in my heart the title of today’s devotional. And as I began to meditate on this, the Person of the Holy Spirit opened my understanding to appreciate that I am created in the image and likeness of God. Very importantly, I am like God and empowered to act like Him in every way possible. So, my wife and children do not have to see God physically to know that He exist. All I have to do to bring the reality of God to bear in their lives is for me to reflect the God-like nature to them and act like Him in all that I do with them, through them and for them.
As the husband and head of your family, you are a kind of Christ in your family kingdom. This means that whatever Jesus represented to His disciples is what you are to your wife and children. God has ordained you as a priest over your flock so that you can reflect His nature for your wife and children to see. The same manner Jesus treated His Church is the same way He expects you to treat your wife and children. The Scripture says, as I am, so you are (1Jn.4:17).
But how do I become like Jesus to my wife and children? First, you must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the Perfect example of the godly husbandman. It is the level of relationship that you have with Jesus, the Groom that determines the quality of relationship you would have with your wife and children. The more you search to know Him, the more He reveals Himself and nature to you. And as you absorb more of Him into your spirit man, the more you reflect His character. And the scripture says in Matt.5:16 that you are the light of the world (Matt.5:16). Secondly, you must continue to examine yourself based on the word of God to see if you are still behaving like the good and godly husbandman. The Bible admonishes that we examine ourselves (2Cor.13:5). As the husband, it is okay to deceive others but very dangerous when you deceive yourself.
Thirdly, you must define the relationships you surround yourself with. When you surround yourself with shepherds who emotionally and physically abuse their wives and children, you will be inspired to do the same to your flock. When you have husbands, who talk down on their wives and children and make them look worthless, you may not escape the influence to do the same to your flock. As it is often said, “you cannot stay around smoke and not smell smoke”. This is why the Scripture says, come out from among them (2Cor.6:17). You must make concerted and determined effort to cut off from any relationship that takes you farther away from your wife and children, diminishes the image of God in your life and make you act like a godless shepherd to your wife and children. When you commit to these demands, your light will shine before your wife and children. Consequently, they would honour you and serve you as their head and leader.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, by Your Spirit, empower me to be like Jesus Christ, before my wife and children.
- Father, by the blood of Jesus, cleanse me from every filthiness designed to corrupt my life.
- Father, by the power in the blood of Jesus, deliver me from ungodly and unreasonable relationships.
FAITH CONFESSION
I have the mind of Jesus in me and live His life for the sake of my wife and children because that is what makes me a good and godly man, husband and father, in Jesus name. Amen.
