PASSING DOWN GODLY LEGACIES

The main text of today’s devotional is quite long and revealing. And it is directed to fathers. Let me begin by saying that every time you pass down instructions to your children as the hodly husband and father, you are imparting them with your spirit. And this becomes their anchor in the future when the challenges of life show up. This is what the Scripture in Jer.35 wants to communicate to you and I. And I pray in the name of Jesus that the Person of the Holy Spirit will expand to you the revealed truth about the enormous influence you have in the lives of your wife and children.

Now, this is the gist of the Scriptures. The king sent one of his aides to go to the house of Rechabites. He invited them to a party where there was so much of wine to drink. Despite the attraction and offer from the king, they refused to be defiled by the king’s meat (Dan.1:8). The king said, “and I have set before the sons of the house of Rechabites pots full of wine and cups and I said unto them, drink ye wine”(Jer.35:5). And the House of Rechabites replied, “But they said, we will drink no wine for Jonadab the son of Rechabite our father commanded us saying, ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons forever”. (Jer.35:5-6). You must always remember that your children are seeds from God. God demands that you nurture them in the admonition of the Lord Jesus (Eph.6:4). They are the bridge that connects your present to your future. They are from your loins and not that of your wife hence you will give account to God of what you did with their lives.

But how do I pass down godly legacies and empower make my wife and children to escape the defilement of the world, sin and the devil? First, you must know the provisions God has made for them from the Bible. This requires that you take personal responsibility to search the Bible by the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit. Until you know what is provided in the Word of God for you and your sheep, you cannot fight for what is yours. According to Scriptures, knowledge is powerful. They that do know their God shall do exploits…(Dan.11:32). Secondly, you must tirelessly and consistently command your seed to follow the instructions of the Lord through the weapon of prayer and intercession. God never asked fathers to negotiate with their children about a righteous walk (Gen.18:19, Jos.24:15, Jer.35:6). And the ways you command them to follow godly instructions are by your conduct and personal intercession, praying for them (Gal.4:19). Thirdly, you must be focused and remain so. A lot of the times as the godly father, you take decisions based on emotions and sentiments rather than on the truth. You must not be distracted by their cries or feelings, as long as it is done in love and in accordance with the will of God. (Matt.6:22). You have a great future with your children and your wife also. Let your voice speak loudest in their lives more than anything else.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

• Father, by the power in the blood of Jesus Christ, I exempt my wife and children from the power of ungodly relationships and influences.
• Father, by the blood of Jesus Christ, create in the hearts of my wife and children clean hearts and right spirits.
• Father, by the Spirit of God, empower me to lead my wife and children in the way and admonition of the Lord Jesus.

FAITH CONFESSION

I shall command my wife and children to walk in the way of the Lord Jesus because that is the pathway to becoming a good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
