As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doeth his children. That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory (1 Thess.2:11-12).
Let me begin by saying that there are three levels of fatherhood. You have a father, the father and the godly father. A man who has a child but not married to the mother of that child is a father. So, any man can be a father. A man who is married to the mother of his child but fails in his covenant responsibilities to his children is a father. A man who is married to the mother of his child (ren) and takes up his responsibilities fully as commanded by God is the godly father. And the perfect will of God for you is to become the godly father to your sheep. God wants you to demonstrate His nature in everyway possible so that your sheep can understand the fatherhood of God.
Now, what is the nature of the godly father and how does it reflect the character of God our Father? From the Scripture in 1Thessalonia chapter 2 and verses 11 to 12, three characteristics were highlighted. It says, as ye know how we EXHORTED and COMFORTED and CHARGED everyone of you as a FATHER DOTH HIS CHILDREN. You are a father not only to your children but also to your wife. Infact, by the anointing of God upon your life as the head of your family, you are both their physical and spiritual father. So, what does a father do? As a father, you exhort, comfort and motivate your wife and children. You are commanded to encourage your wife and children and not discouraged them. You are also commanded to comfort your wife and children when they are hurt mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and in any other areas possible. You are also to inspire and motivate them notwithstanding their failures.
But what can I do to function in this office? The first and most important step to take is for you to take charge of your family and refuse external and ungodly influences. Let satan and the whole world know that you are in charge of your family kingdom. You must not look or act like someone who is being begged to be a father or lacking in knowledge of what to do. Secondly, you must act responsibly. This means you must do all things decently and in order bringing glory to God. Thirdly, you must contend for your position as a husband in prayers. You would be foolish to think that satan is happy that you are the head and the godly father to your family. The first husband, Adam, tried it and he paid dearly for this assumption. He failed! Prayer does not only empower you, it also generates wisdom that puts in control and command of your sheep and sheepfold. You must stop behaving like a garage tout. Fatherhood is your glory. Being a godly father is your heritage. Let it count for your wife and children.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for failing in my responsibilities of the godly father to my sheep.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to function as the godly father to my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me wisdom to lead my wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
I take responsibility to think, act and behave like the godly father to my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen
