Main Scriptures: Jas.4:4-6
More Scriptures: Ps.25:9, 1Pet.5:5, Pro.11:12
The subject of humility is one area of character development that every husbandman really needs if he must become the good and godly man, husband and father to his wife and children. And this is why I want you to give attention to today’s teaching. Humility gives you access to enjoy the help of God in the administration of your sheepfold. For by strength shall no man prevail. Humility also saves you from the anger of God. Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgement, seek righteousness, seek meekness, it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger. (Zeph.2:3). In the Book of James chapter 4 and verse 6 the Word tells us the advantage of humility and the danger of pride, which is the opposite of humility. But he giveth MORE GRACE. Wherefore he saith GOD RESISTETH THE PROUD BUT GIVE GRACE UNTO THE HUMBLE. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you (Jas.4:6-7). Humility of heart is the attribute of the godly husbandman, but a proud heart is of the devil.
As the good and godly husbandman, you must understand that recognizing that you have offended your wife and children and be willing and ready to apologize is humility. If you disrespected your sheep or abused them, it is wrong and you must be ready to tell them, “I am very sorry”. If your wife or child (ren) tells you about a negative character trait that you manifest both at home and in public, please don’t claim you are the boss or they do not have the right to inform or correct you. Simply thank them and look inward and work with the Person of the Holy Spirit to help you overcome those negative attitudes.
Now, what do you stand to gain if you develop a heart of humility toward God and your wife and children? Let’s begin with God. When you are humble in heart before God, He does two very important things for you. The first is that He helps you. By your humility, you demonstrate to Him that you cannot do it by yourself. And if God helps you, you will succeed in every area of your life. God gives grace (help) unto the humble (Jas.4:6). The second benefit God gives to you is that He delights in correcting you. This means that God shows you the area where you have erred, and lovingly tells you what to do to overcome the errors. The Scripture says that the humble will He guide (Ps.25:9). And as He guides and leads you, you develop into the fullness of the godly man, husband and father. And to your wife and children, your life becomes accessible to them and when that happens, they are confident to relate with you as a friend. Lastly, your humility becomes an inspiration to your wife and children, thereby developing godly nature in them.
