Main Scriptures: Gen.2:15-17
More Scriptures: Mal.2:14, Eph.5:22, 1Pt.3:7
And the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. (Gen.2:15-17)
.The summary of today’s main Bible passage is what forms the title. That is, exercise utmost care and maintenance over the assets that God has committed to your hands as the good and godly husbandman. Do you know the reason why you must dress and keep your sheep and sheepfold? It is because you are the shepherd and the leader in your home. You are also the head of the family. God gave you a wife and blessed you with children, hence they are precious assets from the Lord (Jn.3:27).
After God had invested so much to create a beautiful architectural masterpiece called the heaven and earth, He handed the earth over to the man and gave the custodian, Adam, clear instructions. He said to him, “dress and keep it”. Unfortunately, Adam disobeyed the instruction and bungled the asset, and destroyed its value.
This is the lesson for you and I as godly husbandmen. God has handed over His sheep and sheepfold, that is your wife and children, to you. God has also provided clear instructions in His word on how to dress and keep your sheep. The choice to either exercise diligent care or not over your wife and children is yours to make. Your wife and children are precious in the sight of God, so you must see them in that light. God took His time to form your wife and children. He exercised diligent care and precision when He formed them and they were very good. And He saw that everything that He has created was VERY GOOD (Gen.1:26). God did not give you a bad wife or children. He gave you a very good wife and wonderful children (Is.1:18-19). If there is anything bad about them, you are principally responsible for it. You cannot maltreat, disrespect, and abuse your wife and children and expect to reap their loyalty, honour, and respect.
So, how do I handle my wife and children with utmost care? The first step is for you to see them the same way God sees them. They are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps.139:14). If you have the right perspective about them from God’s word, you will treat them with care, respect and dignity. Secondly, you must consciously fill your heart with good thoughts about them rather than think evil of them. This is because, from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Lk.6:45, Pro.23:7).
Are you ready to exercise utmost care in the way and manner you treat your wife and children? I know you are eager. Start now!
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for maltreating my wife and children and please teach me how to exercise diligent care in handling them.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to honour my wife and children as You would.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me not to take Your grace and my leadership role for granted.
FAITH CONFESSION
From now on, I see my wife and children as God sees them and I exercise the utmost care in handling them because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
