Main Scriptures: Philippians 3:12-14
More Scriptures: Rom.12:21, Philp.4:8, Ps.23:1
Yesterday, we mentioned four commitments you and I must make for ourselves and for our wives and children.
Can we go on? I can hear you saying, yes, we must continue.
Each day when you wake up, you must be determined and commit to go all out to work legitimately to earn wages so that you can provide for the needs of your wife and children. God blesses us principally through the works of our hands (Ps.1:3). You must detest laziness and embrace work because there is dignity in labour. God is a worker. Jesus Christ is a worker. You are made in their image and likeness. You cannot be anything less or different. Do not follow the rudiments of the world that is contrary to what the word of God commands you to do as the good and godly shepherd. If any cannot provide for his household, he is worse than an infidel (1Tim.5:8). The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want (Ps.23:1).
You must be committed and be determined to practice and develop good thinking (Pro.5-9). You can never be greater than the quality of your thought. And this is why the Word of God warns you and I to be very careful what we allow into our hearts because as a man thinks so is he (Pro.23:7). Now, what should your thought pattern take? It is found in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 8. Whatever is true, whatever is lovely, whatever is pure, whatever is of good report, think on these things (Philippians 4:8). And in case your are struggling to think right, see what the Scripture provides as the answer. And do not conform to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Rom.12:2). You must not allow thoughts of revenge, malice, hatred, unforgiveness and bad will against your wife and children to dominate your heart. Rather, you must allow righteous thoughts to fill your heart. You must understand that God has commanded you to love your wife and not to be bitter against her. So, if you want to please God, you must allow the word of His power to fill and dominate your heart.
You must be committed and be determined to make and keep proper commitments (Philippians.3:12-14). This is an important area that is missing in the lives of most husbandmen. They cannot be trusted because they cannot keep commitments. As the head of the family and the mentor to your wife and children, it is very important for you to know that trust is what energizes them to follow you. If they can trust you, they will defend you. Your word must be your bond. You must therefore keep the commitments you made to your wife to love her and be faithful to her. You must also keep the commitments you made to your children that you will provide for their needs as their father.
