In the traditional setting of the fulani culture, it is important for the herdsman to count and value his sheep when he returns them from grazing. He does this exercise intentionally and deliberately. But why does he count and value his sheep? It is for the simple fact that he wants to ensure that no member of the sheepfold is missing and they are also in good condition. He acknowledges that his sheep has become his primary and principal responsibilities so he does everything to identify with his sheep.
This is the same attitude God wants you to have over your wife and children as the head and shepherd of the sheepfold. In Jer. 33:13, the Scriptures tell us that the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them…(Jer.33:13). Now, the hand of him that counted the flock is the shepherd. And God has made you the shepherd of your home and over your wife and children. So, if you don’t want to lose your wife and children and you desire to know their true condition, please count and value them.
But what does it mean to count your sheep? It means to ask after each person under your roof, beginning with your wife. Perhaps you left home early in the morning to work. It is very important that when you return from work you must ask after them. Ask about their day and what happened during the day. Peradventure that the children have gone to sleep, do not forget to count and value them when they wake up. When you ask after the well-being of your wife and children, you will be able to identify if your child or wife is sick, discouraged or depressed so that you can pray for them. The reason why your child will sneak out of your house to a night club or go to sleep in a friend’s house without your knowing as the gateman of the house is for the simple reason that you did not count them, when you got back home from work.
Even when you are not in town, you can call to speak with each person in the house. That is effective head count monitoring technique. And this is the more reason you will have to live in unity with your wife and children. Don’t allow television or food to take the place of your responsibility of head-counting the members of your family. If you want to fill the pulse of your wife and children and intervene appropriately and promptly, number them. You will have no excuse to give if your family fails or any member of your sheep is missing. God will hold you accountably-responsible because He sent you to be their shepherd. You cannot afford to fail Him.
