I AM THE GODLY FATHER (2)

Spread the love

Main Scriptures: Gen.2:14-25

More Scriptures: Col. 3:21, Ps.22:4, Jer.11:4

Yesterday, by the grace of God, we laid the foundation on which you and I are ordained to build our fatherhood heritage. And the word of God commands us in Ephesians chapter 6 and verse 4 to nurture our children in the way and admonition of the Lord. So, the question is, how do you nurture your child.

As the good and godly husbandman, you must understand and accept the truth of Scriptures that the responsibility to nurture your child in the way and admonition of the Lord rests squarely with you. This means that you, and not your wife or relations, must take personal responsibility for whatever happens to your child whether positive or negative. Secondly, you must appreciate the truth that your child is a seed from you. And as a seed in your hands, you sow them on good grounds of godly values.

The first task that you have toward your child (ren), is to provide him or her with a godly structure. I mean laying a Christ-like foundation upon which they will build their attitudes, relationships, conduct, character, thought and visions. As the good and godly father, you must know that you are a mentor and a coach to your children. You have the advantage and power to design the right foundations and structure that would give them an idea of how they should live (Matt.5:14-16, Eph.6:1-2).

This is what Eli didn’t do. Yes, he was a priest. He heard from God from time to time. He had access into the presence of God. Yet, he did not build a godly structure for his children. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth because his sons made themselves vile and he restrained them not (1Sam.3:13). Prophet Samuel also made the same mistake of not building a godly structure for his sons, inspite of his position as a true man of God. And it came to pass when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. Now the name of his first son was Joel, and the name of the second, Abiah, they were judges in Beersheba. And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes and perverted judgment. Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel unto Ramah. And said unto him, behold thou art old and thy sons walk not in thy ways, now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel……  (1Sam.8:1-6).

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, guide me to discover my role as the good and godly father to my wife and children.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, teach me Your word and give me an understanding heart as I study Your word.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to obey all Your commandments as they concern my role as a father.

FAITH CONFESSION

I take the lead in nurturing and admonishing my children as their father and as commanded by God because that is what defines my roles as the good and godly father in my sheepfold in Jesus name. Amen.
