The Bible, which is the word of God, contains instructions, precepts, guidance, admonition, correction and commandments. All of these from God is to make us think like Him, act like Him and live like Him (Gen.1:26-28). So, today, I want us to consider the aspect that has to do with commandment and that is to love your wife as Christ has loved the church.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church and gave himself for it. So ought men to love their wives. Nevertheless, let everyone in particular so love his wife even as himself (Eph.5:25, 28,33).
God commands you to love your wife, and not another person’s wife. It is a commandment and it is not transferrable. It is not an advice neither is it a suggestion. It is also not an admonition. It is not what you wish to do but what is demanded of you to do. You are to love your wife as Jesus Christ loves the church. The issue of love rests squarely with you and not your children, parents, pastor or family members.
But why did God commands me to love my wife? The first is that your wife has become your responsibility and must therefore be adored. Secondly, your wife responds to things. When you throw love at her she responds by giving you love respect, reverence and honour. The truth is that your wife will always respond to the measure of love that she receives from you. Thirdly, your wife has become a part of you (Gen.2:24-25). She is a joint heir of the grace of God upon your life (1Pet.3:7).
So, if you love your wife, you indirectly love yourself and if you hurt her, you are also hurting yourself. God has not called you to generate bitterness in your home nor sent you to hate your wife. Your appointment as the good and godly husbandman is to sow the seed of love into the lives of your wife and children. If you sow love to your wife as commanded by God, you will reap respect and honour from your wife. Are you set to obey the commandment of God to love your wife? Wisdom says do it. Go ahead and do it. Love your wife as Christ commands you to.
