Bible Texts: Gen.2:14-25, Col. 3:21, Ps.22:4, Jer.11:4, Eph.6:4, Deut. 6:4-9, Jos.24:15, 1Tim.3:4
Yesterday was mother’s day and it was celebrated around the world. Many virtues of the mother were mentioned and it is so heart-warming to know how important mothers are to the body of Christ, the family and the world. To all the mothers, happy mother’s day!
But there is one person that is also very important. It is the father because it takes the father to create the mother. He plants his seed into her womb as a woman. She carries the seed for nine (9) months and bears a child, changing her status from a woman to a mother.
The subject of fatherhood is very important to the success of the good and godly husbandman. It is one of the aspects of the husbandman that defines how much influence he will have over his wife and children. From the word of God, fatherhood is the platform God has provided for you to transfer God’s nature, your person and your tomorrow to your sheep. And if you can truly take personal responsibility to become the good and godly father indeed to your wife and children, your future shall be peace and quietness.
But who is a father and what makes him the good and godly father? A father is an IDENTITY, a MALE FIGURE who PROVIDES PROTECTION, STRUCTURE, MORAL VALUES, BLUEPRINT, VISION and PURPOSE for the FAMILY.
Any man can be a father, but it takes a responsible, committed, sacrificial and God-fearing man to be the good and godly father. The real father makes all the positive difference in the child’s life. He is a pillar of strength, support, and discipline. His work is endless and oftentimes thankless.
Study these Bible passages and think on them. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger but nurture them in the way and admonition of the Lord (Eph.6:4). Note the underline words. And these words which I command thee this day shall be in thine heart. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shall talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and why thou liest down, and when thou risest up (Deut.6:6-7). And, as for me and mine house we will serve the Lord (Jos.24:15).
That you have children is not what gives value to your fatherhood. Being the real father is more than having a child that bears your name. Your true worth is determined by how much work you are willing to engage in as demanded by God in His word in the direction of your children. You can only proof your worth as the good and godly father in the lives of your children by your godly conduct, attitude, righteous values and sense of responsibility and commitment to nurturing them in the way and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ and the precepts of the Bible.
You are more than a sperm donating agent. You are the good and godly father. Your child or children are seeds from God (Ps.112:2). God will hold you accountable for what you did and did not do with the (seed) children He has blessed you with. You are the agent of godly change in the lives of your children (1Tim.3:4). Make all the positive difference in their lives.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to discover my covenant role as the godly father of my family.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to live up to my responsibilities as the head and father to my children and wife.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, strengthen my faith to walk in authority in all the affairs of my family life as the father.
FAITH CONFESSION
I take full responsibility to become the father indeed to my wife and children and I break every root of irresponsibility in my life because I want to be the good and godly father in Jesus name. Amen.
