And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also. For therefore am I sent and he preached in the synagogues of Galilee (Lk.4:43-44).
Consider the last statement Jesus Christ made in our main Scripture today. He said, “therefore am I sent, and he preached (taught)”. One of the responsibilities that God expects from you as the head of your wife and children, is to teach them and be the good and godly example. This means you have the responsibility to teach and reflect what you teach to your wife and children, and the world. The Bible says of you, ye are the salt of the earth, a city set on a hill that cannot be hid (Matt.5:14-16).
As the head of your family, the first place where you demonstrate the love of God is in your home. Your first parish, where you teach the word of God is not your church but your home, and your first congregation is your wife and children. Jesus Christ, the Perfect example of the good and godly husbandman, did not only teach His disciples, He was also an example to them. The former treaties have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach (Acts 1:1). That is who you are-a teacher and example of the principles of the word of God. You must be a doer of the word of God in your personal life, and in your relationship with your wife and children and to the world.
But how do I become an effective teacher and example to my wife and children? The first step is for you to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by accepting Him as your Lord and Personal saviour. The Scriptures say that, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, behold old things have passed away, all things have become new (2Cor.5:17). You need the newness of Christ in your life to manifest His nature as the good and godly husbandman.
Secondly, you must invest your time and give attention to the study of and meditation on the word of God (Jos.1:6-8). You must hide the word of God in your heart. You must think on the word. This is so important because it is the word of God that provides you with the truth, the way and the life you ought to teach your wife and children.
Finally, you must act on the word and submit to the teaching of the Persons of the Holy Spirit (Jn.14:26, Jas.1:22-25). The Person of the Holy Spirit empowers you with what to teach yourself and your wife and children. He also empowers you to practice what you teach.
Therefore, keep looking unto Jesus Christ (Heb.12:1-3). He is your perfect example. Be the good and godly teacher to your wife and children and the marketplace. Make your life an example for your wife and children to emulate.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make me a living and godly example to my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to become a positive influence to my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from every root of deceitfulness, unhealthy habits and pretenses.
FAITH CONFESSION
I give my life as a seed unto God that I may live a life well pleasing to Him, my wife and children as the good and godly man, husband and father, in Jesus name. Amen.
