SEEK THE WORD FOR THE GOOD OF YOUR SHEEP

Spread the love

Bible Texts: Col.3:1-2, Ps.121:1, Ps.23:1, Matt.6:9, Ps.119:49, Ps.119:130, Ps.119:105, Jn.8:32, Jos.1:6-8, Heb.12:2

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God (Col.3:1-3)

Let us start today’s teaching with two questions and I encourage you to please answer them truthfully. As the head of your family and the spiritual authority that God has placed over your wife and children, where is your affection and where do you focus your life’s decision as the man, husband and father? Is it what God says or what satan and man say?

Our main Bible text in Colossians chapter 3 and verses 1 to 2 admonishes you and I who are redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ to seek the word of God and not on the things on earth. The word of God is life and in it is hidden the secrets and influence that makes you the good and godly husbandman (Jn.8:32, Ps.119:105).

But what does it mean to seek things above and who is above? The Psalmist says, I will look up to the hills from whence my help come. For my help comes from the Lord who made the heaven and the earth (Ps.121:1-2).

To set your attention on things above is to give attention to God and His words rather than the philosophy of man. It means being influenced in your decision and action by the word of God. So, when your wife or children offend you, you will rather consider what the word of God says and act on them rather than what you feel. This means that when you feel your wife and children have offended you, you will easily forgive them rather than seek revenge. You will show them mercy rather than seek to hurt them. It could be that you feel depressed, discouraged and in despair because of the challenges of life. Rather than look to man, drugs, alcohol or other dangerous lifestyles, you will look unto Jesus Christ for help. Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2). When you look into the word of God, you are also seeking the fullness of the personality of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman, and the outpouring of His wisdom. The wisdom of God empowers you to know the right steps to take, the right way to go and the right words to speak.

However, there are two major ways you seek what is above. The first is by giving attention to the study, meditation, and practice of the Word of God (Jos.1:6-8). Secondly, you pray and act by faith. For he that must come to God must first believe that he is and he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Heb.11:6).

God wants you to rule your life, wife, children and sheepfold by His word. He wants you to lead your wife and children by His word. He wants to partner with you to make the best of your life as the good and godly husbandman. Wouldn’t you rather look up to Him for the good of your life, wife and children?

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from every form of distraction and keep my eyes focused on You and Your word.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me a heart to trust Your Word for my life and the lives of my wife and children.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to function as the good and godly husbandman to my wife and children.

FAITH CONFESSION

I seek God and His word for every decision I make and act on as I lead my life, wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
