I have come to realize that the principal way to enjoy peace and a life of assurance and hope as the godly husbandman is to be spiritual. What keeps you going as you lead your wife and children as their shepherd is the quality of your walk with God and His word. Infact, it is the cure to frustration, depression and discouragement. And this is why I want us to consider the profitability of being spiritual by walking in the newness of life in Jesus Christ.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be CARNALLY minded is death, but to be SPIRITUALLY minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So, then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom.8:5-8. As the head of the family and the spiritual leader of your wife and children, it is very important for you to take your spiritual life very seriously. A lot of husbandmen are so carnally minded that they have lost grip of their family’s spiritual heritage. They have lost their inner peace, their salvation, their hope for eternity. You must understand that the office of the husbandhood has its root in God, who is spiritual (Gen.1:26-28, Gen.2:16-18). The Scripture says that God is spirit (Jn.4:24). And if you want to do the will of God as the good and godly man, husband and father, you must be spiritually minded-read the WORD, meditate on the WORD, believe the WORD, think the WORD and act on the WORD as way of life.
But what does it mean to be spiritually minded and to walk in the newness of life? It means to be ruled by the word of God. As the husbandman and leader of your home, your decision towards your wife and children must be influenced and determined by what the Bible says. The word of God must take first place over and above your feeling, the suggestion of man and the position of your culture and the society. And when you allow the word of God to guide your decision and conduct, then your light will shine before your wife and children and the world (Matt.5:16). You must recognize that you are a spiritual being occupying a spiritual office.
On the other hand, carnality is when you are ruled by satan, sin and the world. Sadly, this has led to the destruction of many sheepfolds and sheep. Carnality has led many husbandmen to compromise on their stand on what is godly and righteous. Carnality has made many husbandmen to take decisions that have negatively affected the quality of their relationship with their sheep. And this has led to bitterness, hatred and unhappiness between the husbandman and his wife and children. You must guard your life and that of your wife and children from the noises of the world. You must not act on what you think or what people say. You must give attention to the word of God and let it guard the way you relate with your wife and children. It is profitable for you and gain to your wife and children and sheepfold.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to live by Your Spirit and walk in the newness of life.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, destroy every form of carnality in my life.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, restore to me the joy of my salvation.
FAITH CONFESSION
I give myself to spiritual demands of prayer, word study, fasting and fellowship with God and walk in the newness of life in Christ Jesus because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen
