RECONSTRUCT THEIR LIVES BY YOUR WORDS

Bible Texts: Jas.3:2-8, Philp.4:8, Prov.16:24, 1Pet.3:7-9, Ps.51:10, Hab.3:17, Is.61:9, Col.4:6

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body…….behold also the ships, which though they be so great and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth. And the tongue is a fire……. (Jas.3:2, 3-5).

The above scripture talks about the smallest part of the human body yet possesses so much power that it can either make or destroy a people, a nation and a family. It is the tongue and what it spews out. A story was told of a small fire that broke out in Thomas Farriner’s bakery in Pudding Lane in 1666. The fire started small but it eventually destroyed one-third of the city, with over 100,000 people left homeless. This is what happens when you have not learnt to bring your tongue under control and the influence of the Holy Spirit but allow your tongue to ignite negative sparks.

Let me begin by saying that many husbandmen have hurt their sheep by the words of their mouth more than they have hurt them when they have not giving them money or any other provision. Many more shepherds have lost their sheep because of the wrong words that they have spoken which have hurt them so deeply that they are struggling to forgive. This is why the message for today is timely for you from the word of God. As the head of your family, you must discipline and bridle your tongue to enable you reconstruct your words towards your wife and children.

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul and health to the bones (Pro.16:24). Pleasant words you speak to your wife and children builds them up and makes them fit spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. For instance, rather than insult your wife and children that they are dullards when they fail or make mistakes, you can encourage them by telling them that they can be better. You tell them that they are not failures but a success. You tell them that God has made them to ride upon the high places of the earth (Hab.3:17). You tell them they are fearfully and wonderfully made. You tell them that they are the seeds that the Lord has blessed (Is.61:8-9). You tell them they are honourable, bold and beautiful. You tell them they are and can be the best in life. You assure them that they can count on you for advice, help, comfort, counsel and support. These are the words that your wife and children want to hear and not abuses and insults that torture them and make them emotionally unstable.

But how do I reconstruct my words to become right words? The answer is found in Col.4:6. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man (Col.4:6). Before you talk, ask if what you would say is pure, lovely (Philp.4:8). Secondly, you must walk and be in the Spirit. What this means is that you are conscious of the word of God about who you are as the goodly husbandman. It is the consciousness of the word of God in you that restrains and controls your inner man from speaking ungraceful words to your wife and children. Finally, bring your life under the control of Jesus Christ through prayers (Mk.9:27-29).

When you do this, you will grow to speak graceful words as the good and godly husbandman to your wife and children.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to weigh my words against Your weight before I say them to my wife and children.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to have total control over my tongue that it may speak not guile.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to speak graceful words to my wife and children.

FAITH CONFESSION

I weigh my words on the measurement weight of Jesus Christ and by it I am empowered to speak seasoned and graceful word to my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus Name. Amen.
