Bible Texts: 1Chro.4:8-10, Ac.14:15, Jas.5:17, 1kgs.17:1, Acts 4:24-31, Lk.21:23-27, Matt.15:32, Lk.18:1, Mk.9:29, Jn.2:7, Jos.21:45, Acts 1:1
The story of Jabez continues to strike important lessons for the husbandman. His story and life was that that moved from despair to hope, from fear to faith and from shame to grace. His testimony confirms that God’s plan for the husbandman is good and not evil to give him a hope and a great future (Jer.29:17).
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. AND GOD GRANTED HIM THAT WHICH HE REQUESTED (1Chro.4:8-10).
Jabez was a man whose name meant sorrow. He had had unfavourable circumstances around his life and that of his family. His name and that of his family was an embodiment of sorrow. But he desperately desired to move his family forward. And the only way he could do that is by the incredible power of prayer. He asked the Lord three things. The first was that the Lord will bless him. The second was that the Lord will enlarge his coast. The third is that the Lord will keep him from evil. And God answered all his petitions and he became more honourable than all his brethren.
As the good and godly husbandman, God is still in the business of answering prayers. He has not changed and will never change. And considering the enormous responsibilities that the good and godly husbandman carries, he needs the help of God. Your desire to be free from spell, enchantment, barrenness, addictions, sickness and diseases can be a reality if you can pray in faith. Your desire to see your children make progress in every area of their lives is a possibility. Your desire to see your wife increase and be blessed is a possibility. That is God’s will for you.
The Jabez prayer lessons for you are these. Firstly, you must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman (Jn.3:2-5). Secondly, search the Scriptures to locate what God has said about you, your wife, children, and all other areas. What you find is what forms the seed you sow on the prayer altar to God. Thirdly, be specific and tell God exactly what you want from His word.
Your fervent and effectual prayer as the spiritual leader of the home can stir up the needed changes that you crave for in your life and in the lives of your wife and children. You can move your life, wife and children forward, just as Jabez did.
