So honour the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshipped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lod alone. But if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve…….BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD. The people replied, we would never forsake the Lord and worship other goods (Jos.24:14-16) NLT.
The Bible passage in Joshua chapter 24 and verses 14 through to 16 tells us about one of the attributes of the good and godly husbandman that Joshua displayed. The word of God records that he led his wife, children and home to serve the Lord. He did not allow the pressures of the world to influence his decision to lead his house to please the Lord. He was not just light to the people of Israel, he was light to his wife and children.
That is the attitude that God wants you to have as the husbandman. God wants you to provide godly leadership to your wife and children. God wants you to bring to bear righteousness in your home and in your relationship with them. God wants you to be the arrow head that will influence your wife and children for good and righteous works.
In Matthew chapter 5, the Scriptures talk about your light influencing others to serve God through Jesus Christ. Jesus said, let your light so shine before men that they glorify your Father which art in heaven (Matt.5:14-16). You are the light of God. You are to provide direction to your wife and children in the path of service to God and His word. In 1Timothy chapter 3, the Bible says that you must apt to teach and must be able to rule your own house……(1Tim.3:1-5).
Now, how do you lead your wife and children to serve God through Jesus Christ?
Firstly, you must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, by giving your life to Jesus Christ and accepting Him as your Lord and saviour (Jn.3:7, 2Cor.5:17). You cannot lead your wife and children to serve someone you don’t even know.
Secondly, you must lead yourself to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Until you have learnt to serve Jesus Christ wholeheartedly, you cannot demand the same level of service from your wife and children.
Finally, you must give attention to study the word of God for yourself by the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit, pray the truths you have discovered from the word into your life and the lives of your wife and children and make bold declarations about your stand for God and His righteousness (Jos.1:6-8, Jn.14:26, Rom.10:10, 2Tim.2:15).
God has handed over the leadership of your home, wife and children to you. He wants you to represent Him well and lead them to serve Him in truth and in spirit.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to lead my life in righteousness.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me lead my wife and children in all godliness.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, build me up in righteousness, faith, hope and courage as I lead my life, wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
God has ordained me to lead my wife and children to serve Him in truth and in spirit. This is what I am committed and determined to do as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
