The husbandman has three parts. Inside the husbandman is the man, husband and father, and each personality has its specific roles as enshrined in the word of God-The Bible.
By the grace of God and the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit, we shall be considering the third person in the husbandman, the father. We shall also look into the Bible to find out what the father is ordained by God to do.
Father means source, sustainer. From him flows out all things. And this is why Jesus Christ while on earth always recognized God as His Father. In Matthew chapter 6, when He taught the disciples how to pray. He began by saying, our Father, who art in heaven……. What this means therefore is that you are the father to your wife because when you married her, you took over and continued from her biological father. You are also a father to your children because through You, God blessed your seed and gave you children (Gen.4:1).
Now what did the Scripture say you must do as the father?
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doeth his children. That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory (1Thess.2:11-12).
From this Bible passage, God commands you to perform three roles. These are exhortation, comfort and motivation. As ye know how we EXHORTED and COMFORTED and CHARGED everyone of you as a FATHER DOTH HIS CHILDREN (1Thess.2:11).
So, how do I exhort my wife and children? As the father, you must strongly encourage your wife and children to do what is right, pure, lovely, godly and goodly (Philp.4:8). You must also teach them and help them to think and act righteously everywhere they go. You must help them to seek all the virtues of Christ. However, the encouragement your wife and children will need to be good and godly vessels is your lifestyles (Matt.5:14-16). If you have not conducted yourself as the good and godly example in word and in deed, it will be very difficult for them to trust and follow your advice.
To comfort your wife and children as their father requires that you help them overcome their challenges, pains and failures. As the father, you do not disrespect and abuse your child or wife when they are struggling with some challenges. Rather, what you can do is to help them by interceding for them in prayers (Gal.4:19).
And lastly, you are to charge your wife and children. This demands that you inspire confidence in your wife and children that they can become the best in everything they do. It matters less how many times they may have failed. The Scripture says, say to the righteous, it shall be well with him.
But for you to perform this three-fold ministry, you must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ (2Cor.5:17). You must seek and continue to search the Bible for truths that will empower you to become the good and godly father (Jn.5:39). You must make a choice not to be influenced negatively by the cultures of men, ungodly friends and relationships. You must act responsibly. This means you must do all things expected of you as the good and godly father, bringing glory to Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Finally, you must contend for your heritage as the good and godly father in prayers and fasting (Mk.9:29). Prayer does not only empower you, it also generates wisdom that makes you succeed in all things, including your role as the father.
Fatherhood is your glorious heritage. Do not be ashamed that you are the father. You must not look or act like someone who is being begged to be the father or lacking in knowledge of what to do. Therefore, let the blessing of fatherhood count for your wife and children.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to fulfill my calling as the father to my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, give me the wisdom to accept responsibility for my wife and children as their Father.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, make my life an acceptable and living sacrifice to You as the earthly Father to my wife and children.
FAITH CONFESSION
I am empowered by God to function as a motivator, encourager and inspiration to my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly father, in Jesus name. Amen.
