QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE OF THE HUSBANDMAN

Spread the love

Bible Texts: 1Tim.3:1-7, Gen.1:27, Gen.2:21-25, Rom.12:1, Matt.26:41, 1Pet.5:8, Ps.19:14, Matt.5:14-16, 1Cor.13:5, Acts 1:1, Pro.20:1-3, 2Tim.2:15, 1Tim.6:6, Eph.6:4

In every appointment or position being offered, there are qualifications required. And it is when the person possesses those qualifications that he or she is employed or engaged. It is expected that once the person has been engaged, he or she is expected to demonstrate the qualities that define the position. This is what happens in the secular.

Does this same requirement applies to the office of the husbandman and what are the qualifications?

Yes, the Bible gives the qualifications for the office of the husbandman from 1st Timothy chapter 3 and from verses 1 through to 7.

  1. The husband of one wife (verse 2a). The husbandman must have one wife and nothing more because God made them male and female and not male and females (Gen.1:27, Gen.2:21-25).
  2. Vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach (verse 2b). There are four things that are needful here. The first is that you must be vigilant in prayers, fasting, studying the word of God and in your action (Matt.26:41, 1Pet.5:8). The second is to be of good behaviour in your conduct, attitude, responses and reactions (Ps.19:14, Rom.12:1, Matt.5:14-16). The third is for you to be kind, warm and welcoming to your wife, children and visitors (1Cor.13:5). Fourthly, you must be able to teach your wife and children the values and principles of the word of God. You are your wife and children’s first teacher and not your pastor, school teacher, Sunday school teacher, neighbours, government or friends. You are and have the greatest influence over their lives by what you teach and do (Acts 1:1).Therefore, you must give yourself to learning so that you can have something to teach them (2Tim.2:15).
  3. Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre but patient, not a brawler, not covetous (verse 3). Drinking of alcohol or strong drink does not qualify you as the good and godly husbandman, notwithstanding the lies by the world. It doesn’t make you fit and proper to be called the redeemed husbandman (Pro.20:1-3). You must not be greedy to want to have everything to yourself without considering others. You must not be seeking the good of yourself, but also that of your wife and children (1Tim.6:6). You must not physically abuse your wife or fight in public. It is unhusbandmanly. Your physical strength is to help your wife and children and those around you. You must work on your emotions and put it under control.
  4. One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity (verse 4). The first and most important church for the husbandman is his own family, which is made up of himself, his wife and children. Your rulership starts from your own family, beginning with how you train and nurture your children in the way and admonition of the Lord (Eph.6:4). You must begin the good and godly works of the man, husband and father with your own wife and children and make your home heaven-on-earth before you can extend same to the marketplace.

Now that you have been reminded of the qualifications for the office of the husbandman, do you qualify or fit to be called the good and godly husbandman? Are you doing those things as prescribed in 1st Timothy chapter 3 and verses 2 to 4 or you are failing in your responsibilities?

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for being an ungodly example of Your kingdom, my wife and children.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, reveal more of Yourself to me through Jesus Christ and by Your word.
  • Father, in the name of Jesus, empower me to be the good and godly example of the husbandman in words and in deeds.

FAITH CONFESSION

I have received power from God to be like Jesus Christ in all that I do and say because that is what qualifies me to be called the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
