Bible Texts: Gen.50:18-20, Rom.8:1, Rom.5:5, Eph.5:25-29, 1Pet.3:7-9, Matt.19:5, Rom.12:1-3, Eph.5:25, 1Cor.13:4-7, Rom.5:5, Philp.4:8, Eph.6:4, 1Pet.5:8, Gen.1:26-28
I guess when you got dressed up this morning to go to church, you took few seconds to look at the mirror to check yourself before leaving the house. The mirror gave you a message.
As the good and godly husbandman, I want us to consider the lesson from the mirror. Every time you look into the mirror you see the perfect reflection of what you look like and the dress you put on. The mirror shows you exactly YOU. Now, let us relate this analogy of the mirror with the story in Genesis chapter 50. The lesson learnt is that forgiveness is greater than hatred, and mercy most treasured than silver and gold.
And his brethren also went and fell down before his face and they said behold, we be thy servants. And Joseph said unto them fear not for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive (Gen.50:18-20)
Joseph’s brother betrayed him. They sold him to slavery. They lied about him and put their father, Jacob under pressure. Yet, when there was famine in the land and his brothers needed food and were starving, they had to go to Egypt where their brother, Joseph was in charge. Joseph had the advantage and opportunity to revenge against his brothers for the wrong they did to him. But rather than take the route of revenge he said this words.
“Am I now taking the place of God (Gen.50:9)?”
Joseph says, “I know you have offended me but I have looked at the mirror and I honestly see that I wear the dress of mercy and forgiveness and not hatred, bitterness and unforgiveness. So, I have to let go and let God because mercy and forgiveness is a proof of my godliness”
As the godly husbandman, what dress are you adorning? Is it the dress of mercy, forgiving and letting go? Do you have a bank in your heart where you keep records of the offences of your wife and children? Do you always want to take revenge against them because you think you have the advantage? If there is one virtue that God wants you to have and live with is to forgive and forget (Matt.6:12). Yes, you may be angry but do not let your anger lead you to habour bitterness and unforgiveness in your heart. God wants you to deliberately forgive offences and forget it too.
Forgiveness and letting go is not a feeling. It is a hard, wise and conscious decision you must make. It may be difficult for you to do but it is not impossible because God’s grace is available and sufficient for you.
Therefore, make the choice today to reflect mercy and forgiveness which the mirror of God shows you because that is the proof of spiritual maturity as the good and godly husbandman.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, forgive me for not forgiving the trespass of others.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill me with the heart of compassion and mercy toward my wife, children and others.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, fill me with Your love and empower me to forgive and forget offences instantly.
FAITH CONFESSION
I have looked at the mirror and I see that I adorn the dress of forgiveness, mercy and compassion. This is what I must reflect as I lead my wife and children and conduct myself in the market place because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
