In the last couple of years in ministry, I have had cause to speak with husbandmen that had challenges with their wife and children. One common denominator that flows through all of the conversation is that they wish they can love their wife and children again. They give reasons and excuses why they are unable to love their wife and children. They wished they could do what I admonish them to do. It is important to remind the husbandman that if he continues to excuse his failures to love his wife and children as Christ would, he is just being irresponsible.
But I have come to discover from the Word of God that you don’t wish for things to happen, you partner with God through the Person of the Holy Spirit to make things happen. That is the focus of today’s teaching-helping you to understand how to and applying yourself to make love happen between you and your wife and children.
As the good and godly husbandman, you must take up the challenge of loving your wife and children. You must not only know to how to love, you must actually and truthfully love. The Scripture says this. Be not hearers of the word only, but doers of same (Jas.1:22). The love you extend to them actually grows with time. It is like laying one block upon another until the house is formed. That is what you must do and continue to do.
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments (1Jn.5:1-3)
It is true that loving your wife and children comes with a cost. But if you compare the cost and the benefit, you will realize that the benefits are much more than the cost.
So how do I commit myself to love and to keep loving my wife and children as the good and godly husbandman?
The first step is by praying in the Holy Ghost for the love of Christ to be planted in your heart.
And hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us (Rom.5:5)
Since the love of Christ is spread abroad in your heart by the Holy Ghost, you then have genuine love to give to them. This is because you cannot give what you don’t have. And with the love of Christ firmly planted in your heart, the Person of the Holy Ghost empowers you to make love happen for your wife and children as you lead them.
Secondly, you must walk by faith and not by sight.
Without faith it is impossible to please God…(Heb.11:6)
Without faith in God and His word, you will not be able to extend His kind of love to your wife and children. Without the help of God through Jesus Christ, you will be unable to do anything. The word of God says this. Jesus Christ who is the perfect example of true love says, without me you can do nothing (Jn.15:5).
Partner with the Person of the Holy Ghost in your love walk as Christ has commanded so that you can become the good and godly husbandman that God, your wife and children will be happy with. You can never be wrong loving your wife and children as Christ had loved the church. You gain everything.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, endue me with power to love my wife and children as You have commanded.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, destroy the foundation of bitterness and anger in my life that I have towards my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, guide me continually through Your word and empower me to be both hearer and doer of Your command to love my wife and children as You would.
FAITH CONFESSION
I rededicate my life to love and keep loving my wife and children with the whole of my mind, soul and body because that is a proof that I am a follower of Jesus Christ and the example of the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
