Bible Texts: 1Tim.6:1-12-16, Matt.5:14-16, 2Tim.3:5, 1Pet.1:15-17, Heb.11:6, Num.23:19, Jn.14:6, Mk.12:30, 1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.6:4, Rom.12:21, Heb.12:2
As the husbandman, what are the things God wants you to pursue? What are the things that you must not only set before you but you must think and give your attention to? These questions have become necessary when you consider the disconnection in relationship between the husbandman and God, leading to the failure of the husbandman to live as the good and godly man, husband and father. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, that you will give attention to these pursuits and run with them. Amen.
Now what are the things God wants you to pursue with the whole of your heart, might, spirit and body? 1st Timothy chapter 6 and verse 11 provides the answer.
But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these things. Pursue righteousness, and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance and gentleness (1Tim.6:11) NLT
As the husbandman, there are so many things calling for your attention. There are a lot of distractions around us. But God is telling you today that there are five things you must pursue as the good and godly husbandman.
The Scripture says pursue righteousness. This means that you must do what is right from the perspective of the word of God in every area of life, be it personal, in business, academic pursuits, relationships, at work, with your parents, wife and children, in your service to your nation or community and in governance (Matt.5:14-16).
God also wants you to pursue godliness. God doesn’t want you to have a form of godliness (2Tim.3:5). He wants you to be godly. This means you representing Him on earth as His ambassador. God is holy so whatever you think, say or do, must reflect the nature of God (1Pet.1:15-17).
God wants you to pursue faith because without faith you cannot please Him (Heb.11:6). You must grow in your believe in God and His word. You must trust Him to do what He says He will do (Num.23:19). The word of God must not be your alternative but the only way, truth and life (Jn.14:6). God wants you to walk in love towards Him, your wife and children (Mk.12:30, 1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.6:4). God doesn’t want you to live in bitterness, envy, hatred, unforgiveness and malice. Rather, God wants you to overcome these evil natures with good (Rom.12:21).
God wants you to persevere in all things. To persevere means to remain focus on the goals despite unfavourable conditions (Heb.12:2). Challenges are real. You may have challenges with your wife and children; your present conditions may appear as a mountain. In this, God wants you to remain focus on the goals that He has set for you. Finally, God wants you to be gentle. Gentleness is a spiritual virtue you must crave and possess as the husbandman.
But why must I pursue these things?
That you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again (1Tim.6:14) NLT
