We started yesterday be looking at the characteristics of a husband and the husband. We understood from Scriptures that the perfect will of God for you and I is to be the good and godly husband.
Today let us consider the godly husband.
Who is the godly husband?
The godly husband is the man who is legally and traditionally married to his wife, takes full and absolute responsibilities to provide for her needs, mentor and teach his wife in the way and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ and love her as Christ has loved the church and gave Himself.
Husbands love your wife even as Christ also has loved the church and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word; that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should by holy and without blemish (Eph.5:25-27)
The Scripture in Ephesians chapter 5 and verses 25 to 27 clearly tells you the character of the godly husband. What makes you the godly husband is the way you relate with your wife after the manner of Christ. Being the godly husband is not just in words but in deeds. It comes with sacrifice, loyalty, faithfulness, commitment, determination and faith in God and His word. The nature and character of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of the good and godly husband, must reflect in your conduct, action and response to your wife. That is what makes you the godly husband.
What do I need to be the godly husband after the image and likeness of Jesus Christ?
Firstly, you must make your ways right with God through Jesus Christ by repenting of your sinful life and accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Personal saviour (Jn.3:3-7, 2Cor.5:17). God doesn’t hate you but hates the sin. He wants you to return to Him like the prodigal son returned (Lk.15:11-18).
Secondly, you must delight in the study of the word of God because that is the only reliable source where you can learn about the Person of Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the godly husbandman (Heb.12:2, Jn.5:39, 2Tim.2:15, Pro.4:20-22, Jos.1:6-8). If you want to learn how Jesus Christ loves the bride, the church, give attention to studying the Bible. And if you want to be like Jesus Christ, think and act on what you have learnt (Acts 1:1).
Thirdly, you must pray for empowerment of Holy Ghost to help you become like Jesus Christ in all things. Without the help of the Holy Ghost, you will struggle to be the godly husband because of the forces of satan, sin and the world fighting against the perfect of God for your life (Jn.10:10, Jn.15:5, Philp.2:13, Gal.4:19, Mak.9:29, 2Cor.2:11, 2Cor.10:4-5).
Finally, you must walk by faith and not by sight (2Cor.5:7-9, Rom.12:21, Jn.3:16). Inspite of our weaknesses, failures, mistakes and missteps, Jesus Christ still loves us. He believes in us and He is confident that you and I will come to the saving knowledge of salvation, and this is what has made Him to continue interceding for us (Rom.5:8, 1Tim.2:4, Tit.2:11-12).
You are the ambassador of Christ. You must represent Him as the good and godly husband. That is who you are and what He has ordained your life to be. Make it count!
