OVERCOME OFFENCE WITH GOD’S GOODNESS AND MERCY

Spread the love

Bible Texts: Matt.24:48-51, Gel.4:19, Rom.12:21, 1Cor.5:17, Eph.5:25, 1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.6:4, Matt.6:9-14, Rom.5:5

Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he, hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus and said, hail, Master, and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, friends, wherefore art thou come? Then came they and laid hands on Jesus and took him. And behold, one of the which were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck a servant of the high priest’s and smote off his ear ( Matt.26:48-51)

The story in our main Scriptural text today is an interesting one. Some persons working with Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, who betrayed Jesus, came to arrest Jesus Christ. And as they confronted Jesus Christ, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, who was angry with those who came for Jesus, brought out his sword and cut off the ear of one of the men who was among those that came to arrest Him. Jesus Christ who was the target of the assault asks His disciple to sheath his sword. Jesus picks the cut-off ear and restores it back to its rightful place. Jesus had every reason to leave the ear unattended to and leave the man in pains and anguish. He could as well have raised a revolt and cause public disturbance. Yet, He showed compassion to the man who has come to hurt him.

That is the attitude God wants you to have as the good and godly husbandman. As you lead, offences will come from your wife and children. It may be intentional or not. If you decide to revenge, you are right. And if you make up your mind to give them the treatment of an eye for an eye, you may be justified. But does that make you the godly husbandman? The answer is no, it doesn’t. Jesus Christ, the perfect example of the good and godly husbandman demonstrated to you and I how to conduct ourselves and respond when we are hurt and disappointed. He showed compassion and mercy. Regardless of the offence from your wife and children, God wants you to overcome evil with good. God wants you to shoe compassion towards them.

The Word of God gives you and I a direction to follow.

Be not overcome with evil but overcome evil with good (Rom.12:21)

God wants you to demonstrate compassion and mercy to your wife and children. He wants you to help them recover and restore every godly habits and character that they may have lost to satan, sin and the world. Your wife and children may not deserve it but you can show them what the love of Christ represents (1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.5:25, Eph.6:4).

For you to live like Jesus Christ and allow compassion and mercy to guide your response and action towards your wife and children as you lead them, you must have the life of Jesus Christ working inside of you.

If any man in Christ he is a new creature, behold old things have passed away, all things have become new (1Cor.5:17)

The Scripture says, I no longer live but Christ who lives in me (Gal.2:20-21). The more of His life you have in you, the more His nature you exhibit to your wife and children, and that is what makes you the good and godly husbandman.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISE

  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to overcome offences with Your forgiveness, compassion and mercy.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, help me to overcome the force of revenge and bitterness with the power of Your love.
  • Father, in the Name of Jesus, let Your love be shed abroad in my heart and empower me to extend compassion, mercy and forgiveness to those who offend me.

FAITH CONFESSION

I no longer live by the rules of the world; I am ruled by the word of God and now I have the mind of Christ and to show mercy, compassion and forgiveness to those who offend me because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
