If you can travail on your knees, you will prevail on your feet. Today, I want us to consider the power of prayer and study Jabez as our example because he is like you and I, the husbandman.
The prayer of Jabez is total. It covers every area of the husbandman. This was a man who had unfavourable circumstances around his life and family. His mother gave birth to him in sorrow. His name and that of his family was an embodiment of sorrow. But one day, he reacted to his negative identity. He desired a change. He wanted to move his family forward just the same way you have been longing to make the needed positive changes. So, he prayed.
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me. AND GOD GRANTED HIM THAT WHICH HE REQUESTED (1Chro.4:8-10)
Praise God! God answered him and made him more honourable than his brethren and his family name changed for the best.
Now, when you consider the enormous responsibilities of the godly husbandman, you cannot deny the truth that you need the help of God to succeed. You need supernatural intervention to be free from spells and enchantment; from barrenness, lack and want, struggles, unsustained progress, addictions, failures, sickness and diseases. From our scripture today, the major weapon Jabez used in moving his family forward was prayer-effectual fervent prayer (Jer.33:3, Mk.9:29, Jas.5:17).
As the husbandman, your good and godly desires that will make you a fruitful vine as the man, husband and father can come to pass by the weapon of prayer. The prayer of faith in God and His word is what makes things happen.
Prayer changes everything and anything. Prayer recreates the destiny of any husbandman who dares to engage it, notwithstanding the challenges. Yours may be financial dryness. It may even be stagnation in your marriage life or addiction to drugs or unhealthy habits. Whatever the challenges may be, the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much (Jas.5:17). You can prevail over them on your knees.
But there is an important virtue you must add to your prayers. It is faith in God, His word and His capabilities (Heb.11:1-2).
He that must come to God must first believe that He is and He is the rewarded of them that diligently seek Him (Heb.11:6)
Your fervent and faith-filled prayer is what brings the answers you desire. Faith filled prayers open the floodgates of answers and stirs up the needed changes you crave for. God came through for Jabez. He will come through for you, if you can engage the weapon of prayer of faith (Mal.3:6).
Therefore, keep praying, keep believing, keep declaring and keep expecting. Victory is sure for you as the good and godly husbandman.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, empower me to pray like Jabez did.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, baptize me with the spirit of faith to believe.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, hear me when I call and change the story of my life for the better.
FAITH CONFESSION
I travail on my knees by faith in God and His word, so that I can win on my feet because that is what makes me victorious as the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
