Bible Texts: Jos.24:15, Matt.5:14-16, Ps.23:1, 1Tim.3:1-5, Jn.5:39, Rom.12:21, Eph.5:25-29, 2Tim.2:15, 2Cor.5:17, Jos.1:6-8, Ps.1:1-3, Eph.6:4
One of your highest responsibilities as the husbandman is to lead yourself and your wife and children in the way and admonition of the Lord. It is the best gift you can give to them and the greatest legacy you can leave behind for them. This is why today, we want to consider an example of the husbandman from the Bible who demonstrated this commitment. His name is Joshua.
So honour the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshipped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone. But if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve…….BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD. The people replied, we would never forsake the Lord and worship other goods (Jos.24:14-16) NLT
The Bible passage in Joshua chapter 24 and verses 14 through to 16 tells us about the attribute of the good and godly husbandman which Joshua displayed. Joshua said that as for him and his house they will serve the Lord. Not only that, the people also responded that they will forsake other gods and serve the true God.
God wants you to lead the way in the things of God. God wants you to provide spiritual leadership at home, just as Joshua did. God wants you to be the arrow head that will influence your wife and children for good and righteous works (Matt.5:14-16, 1Tim.3:1-5).
But for you to lead this charge of leading your life and the lives of your wife and children in following after Jesus Christ, you must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, by giving your life to Jesus Christ and accepting Him as your Lord and saviour (Jn.3:7, 2Cor.5:17). This is because you cannot lead your wife and children to serve someone you don’t even know.
You must also be an example of someone who is following after Jesus Christ in truth, in spirit and in conduct. Until you have learnt to serve Jesus Christ wholeheartedly, you cannot demand the same level of service from your wife and children (Matt.5:14-16).
You must consistently give attention to the study of the word of God for yourself through the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit and pray for the indwelling of the Spirit of the word to gain root in your heart and bear fruits in your outward life (Ezk.2:2, Jn.8:32, Lk.18:1, Mk.9:29, Ps.1:1-3, Pro.4:20-25, Jos.1:6-8, Jn.14:26, 2Tim.2:15).
God has handed over to you the leadership of your home. God demands that you lead the way from the front in spiritual instructions, guidance, information and direction (Deut.6:1,6-7, Num.6:22-27, 1Tim.3:1-7, Eph.6:4). God wants you to be a true reflection of Jesus Christ.
