Bible Texts: 1Tim.3:1-5, Matt.5:14-16, Col.3:19, 1Cor.13:4-8, Eph.5:25, Deut.6:1-7, Eph.6:4, Philp.2:13, Gal.4:19, Lk.18:1, Mk.9:29, Acts 1:1
Today’s teaching will be in the form of self evaluation for you and I, whom God has given the privilege to lead as husbandmen. It is inspired by the definition given by Dr. Myles Munroe, when he defines husband as “house bond”, one who binds the home together. And our Bible passage is taking from the 1st book of Timothy chapter 3 and verses 1 through 5. The direction of the teaching will be in the form of questions and I want to encourage you to sincerely answer truthfully.
This is a true saying, if a man desire the OFFICE OF A BISHOP, he desireth a GOOD WORK. A bishop then MUST BE BLAMELESS, the HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE, VIGILANT, SOBER, of GOOD BEHAVIOR, GIVEN TO HOSPITALITY, APT TO TEACH, NOT GIVEN TO WINE, NO STRIKER, NOT GREEDY OF FILTHY LUCRE, but PATIENT, NOT A BRAWLER, NOT COVETOUS, ONE THAT RULETH WELL HIS OWN HOUSE, HAVING HIS CHILDREN IN SUBJECTION WITH ALL GRAVITY (1Tim.3:1-5)
The Scripture in 1st Timothy chapter 3 above provides you and I, who are occupying the office of the husbandman, basis to evaluate ourselves to see if we are still the good and godly husbandmen. This is because becoming the husbandman is a good thing but it requires a lot of work from you and I.
Now, let the exercise start.
The husbandman who wants to be good and godly must be blameless. Are you blameless? Can your wife, children and those you relate with speak well about you? Can they vouch for your character? When your name is mentioned in the marketplace, does it speak of good and righteousness or of sin and bad report (Matt.5:14-16)?
The husbandman who wants to be good and godly must be the husband of one wife. Are you married to one wife or you have more than one? God’s perfect plan for man from the beginning is one man to one woman (Gen.2:18). God did not make a mistake taking just a rib from Adam’s ribs. He could have taken more than one but He is teaching us the sanctity of one man sticking to his wife and not wives.
The husbandman who wants to be good and godly must be vigilant, sober and of good behaviour. Are you vigilant to observe the happenings in and around your home? Are you spiritually alert to know the tricks of satan, sin and the world? Are you sober? How easily and quickly do you accept your mistake when it is brought to your attention by the Person of the Holy Spirit, your wife, children or even those around you? Are you teachable and correctable?
The husbandman who wants to be good and godly must be rule his own home well and be able to teach the word of God to his wife and children and practice what he teaches (Acts 1:1). Are you a teacher of God’s word and not a doer? Or are you teaching and doing what the word of God commands as the man, husband and father?
The office of the husbandman comes with a lot of responsibilities and commitments. It is a call to diligent work and it is a good work indeed. You are not a mistake and a disaster waiting to happen. God has made you the good and godly man, husband and father. Therefore, make your life as the husbandman count positively, bringing glory to Jesus Christ, our Saviour.
