Bible Texts: Gen.2:19, Ps.141:2-3, Pro.12:14, Pro.13:3, Col.4:6, Ps.119:11, Pro.12:14, Matt.26:41, Mk.9:29, Lk.18:1, 1Cor.9:27, Jn.14:26, Jos.1:6-9, Ezk.2:2
Are you aware that your lips, or better still, your mouth, is a door, and that you have a responsibility to keep watch over it? The word of God in Psalms chapter 141 tells you and me so.
I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; KEEP WATCH OVER THE DOOR OF MY LIPS. Ps.141:1-2 (NIV)
As the husbandman, it is not unlikely that you get upset by the conduct and attitude of your wife and children. Sometimes, they may not meet your expectations either in their spiritual walk, academic life, career growth, or relationships. This could make you angry and unhappy. You may be tempted to call them unprintable names. But the word of God admonishes you to keep watch over the door of your lips so that you do not utter words that will destroy your wife and children.
The word of God tells us that whatever name Adam called the animals, that is exactly what they become (Gen.2:19). He called an animal lion, and it truly acts like a lion. The same occurred with zebra, goats, and sheep. That is how powerful your words can be.
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life, the one who opens wide his lips comes to ruins (Pro.13:3) NASB
God wants you to control your lips so that you don’t utter very dangerous words that may inflict permanent damage on your wife and children.
Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know ye ought to answer every man (Col.4:6)
The perfect will of God for you as you lead your life and the lives of your wife and children is to make you the good and godly husbandman. God wants you to speak graceful words towards your wife and children. God wants you to be the example of Jesus Christ to them by your conduct and spoken words. God also wants you to conduct yourself with dignity and discretion.
But how do I guard my lips so that I do not speak ungraceful words to my wife and children?
SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, deliver me from ungodly utterances.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, order my lips to speak graceful words to my wife and children.
- Father, in the Name of Jesus, build me up to gain mastery over my emotions even when I am angry.
FAITH CONFESSION
I keep watch over my lips and I utter only graceful words to my wife and children because that is what makes me the good and godly husbandman in Jesus name. Amen.
