Bible Texts: Gen.2:19, Ps.141:2-3, Pro.12:14, Pro.13:3, Col.4:6, Ps.119:11, Pro.12:14, Matt.26:41, Mk.9:29, Lk.18:1, 1Cor.9:27, Jn.14:26, Jos.1:6-9, Ezk.2:2
I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; KEEP WATCH OVER THE DOOR OF MY LIPS. Ps.141:1-2 (NIV)
Yesterday, with the help of the person of the Holy Spirit, we understood from Scriptures that the husbandman must keep watch over the door of his lips so that he doesn’t speak destructive words to his wife and children. We also learnt that the conduct of your wife and children may sometimes make you upset; however, you must bring your emotions under control so that you do not utter words that will hurt them because words are powerful (Pro.13:3).
Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know ye ought to answer every man (Col.4:6)
God wants you to speak kindly and graciously to your wife and children. God wants you to be the example of Jesus Christ to them by your conduct and spoken words. God also wants you to conduct yourself with dignity and discretion.
But how do I guard my lips so that I do not speak ungraceful words to my wife and children?
Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might sin against thee (Ps.119:11)
You must give attention to the word of God and be prepared to allow the Word to influence you from your inner man (Ps.119:11, Jos.1:6-9). The more of God’s word you have in your heart, the more you are influenced by the power behind the word (Ezk.2:2). And the result will be seen in the graceful words you speak even when you are angry.
Watch and pray that ye fall not into temptation (Matt.26:41)
You must also give yourself to a life of prayer and speaking in the Holy Ghost (Matt.26:41, Mk.9:29, Lk.18:1, 1Cor.9:27). Two things happen when you pray. Prayer helps you bring your emotions under control and opens your heart to receive guidance from the Holy Spirit on what to say (Jn.14:26).
And as you guard your lips and speak graceful words, seasoned with salt and edifying to God, you will bring peace to your home and dispel tension and bitterness (Pro.12:14).
Praise God!
