Those things which ye have both learned and received and heard and seen in me, do and the God of peace shall be with you (Philp.4:9)
As the head of your family and the pastor over your wife and children, it is very important for you to understand that your position as the husbandman is to influence your sheep positively. Many husbands struggle with the challenge of getting their sheep to behave well. Many more are confused why their sheep are disloyal, disrespectful and rebellious. And sadly, much more are restless and agitated about what the future holds for them when they consider the waywardness of their sheep. But by the help of the Holy Spirit, I found the answer to these questions in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 9. And from it you and I can draw key lessons. The first is that your life and conduct communicates a model to your wife and children. What this means is that your sheep learn and do what they see you do. If your conduct is negative, their values will also be negative. And if your conduct is positive, their values will be positive also. The second lesson is the quality of what we teach our sheep concerning the word of God and the walk of life. The third is what we give to them. Do we give them what will destroy them in the future or we give them what will save them tomorrow? Do we give them values of hard work, self-contentment, attitude of gratitude, kindness, patience and lovingkindness or we give them bitterness, envy, covetousness and ingratitude? You must know that everything that comes out of you is a seed. And when you plant it, it will yield harvests. The third is what we say to them. How rich are the words that come out of your mouth to your wife and children? Are they graceful words or curses? Do the words that you speak to your sheep edify them or destroy them? These are some of the questions you need to answer if you desire to make any meaningful impact in the lives of your wife and children.
So, as the head of your family, you must understand that you are your sheep’s first teacher. You have the responsibility to teach them what is right from the word of God by the conduct of your life. …….apt to teach…..one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity (1Tim.3:2,4). Your life is ordained by God to become a living epistle of the love and nature of Jesus Christ, the perfect example of a good and godly husband. Therefore, you must be determined and committed to reflect the very nature of Jesus Christ in your heart, mind, words and conduct. And when your life and conduct impact your sheep for Jesus, you will find peace to your spirit, soul and body.
