The title for today’s devotional remains the test of commitment of any husband. It is a firm vow to be a pillar and a post for your flock. A time came in the life of Naomi, when she had lost all that she had- her sons, her marriage and her husband. She needed to return to her birth place and did not know what to do with her daughters-in-law. But while the other daughter-in-law decided to choose the path of least resistance, Ruth chose the path of honour. She told her mother-in-law that she would go all the way with her even if it would cost her her life. Among the many commitments she made to seek the God of her mother-in-law, she said, if I perish, I perish. Now as the spiritual head of your wife and children and the shepherd of your flock, can you lay down your life for your flock? Are you prepared to go with them all the way until they are established in the plans and purposes of God for their lives? You must understand that your ordination as the head of your family is to raise the bar for your flock. The Scripture tells us that Jesus Christ, who is the perfect example of a good and godly husband, demonstrated such avowed commitment to die for us at Golgotha.
It is not enough for you to claim that you are ready to stay with your wife and children. You must be completely sold out for their sakes and the sakes of their lives. But why should I make such vow? First, it is because God has committed the lives of your wife and children into your hands. In Eph.5:25-28, the Scripture expects you to present your wife to Him as a blameless, spotless and unwrinkled bride. Your children are your seeds. God would demand from you what you made of them because He has entrusted into your hands their training and nurturing (Eph.6:4, Duet.6:7-10). Secondly, God has made you a priest over their lives. You are ordained to pronounce priestly blessings upon them until they attain the fullness of Christ in every area of their lives (Num.6:22-24). Thirdly, you are the shepherd and they are your sheep. And every good shepherd ensures that his sheep are not stolen, lost or destroyed (Jn.10:29). When you are prepared to die for your wife and children, your flock will honour you and will return to do everything and anything to defend you.
